We all want to look beautiful. In fact, let's be honest and say that we'd like to be beautiful. Unfortunately, if we were all searingly pretty, we would likely not all be able to hide in our homes and play video games. For instance this writer looks more like the chimpanzee-slime combination from the Dragon Quest series than a butterfly. Sometimes, reality can be quite harsh.
Of course, to deal with that reality we all have our favorite MMOs that we can play whenever the opportunity presents itself -as it is right now with this week's WRUP. And with the recent success of the almost-MMO Minecraft we asked everyone what they thought was important that their own games be visually appealing. Check out the video below to read our responses, and then let us know what you'll be playing this weekend in the comments! Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman), will be playing a little bit of DIGDIGDIGDIG all day, and I need to get ready for DIGDIGDIG before leaving for GDC. I may DIGDIG some time to DIGDIGDIGDIGDIG play some Minecraft as well.
Graphics? Nah. Gameplay is what matters.
Brianna Royce (@nbrianna) Then I look back on my WRUPs from the past and realize that I am boring... I'm still having a lot of fun in City of Heroes. I guess I am trying to make it last because I know that my guild will grow when Cataclysm is released. I recently bought an entirely new tanker, and wow! I can remember why I normally prefer controllers.
I don't consider myself a graphics snob as I play quite a few older games. I even considered trying the new Ultima Online boats expansion. But a game's gotta have something to counterbalance the uglies, some nugget of nostalgia, or a stunning stroke of gameplay or riveting story. What if the game is gorgeous but it has a terrible gameplay? I won't even give it a second glance.
Edward Marshall: If I have time, I'll play Fallen Earth.
Graphics aren't too important to me. However, I'm expecting more than ASCII in this day and age.
Eliot Lefebvre: Final Fantasy XIV Naturally. Final Fantasy XIV is my current favorite game. I am currently on a search for better armor and weapons. Minecraft Servers It's slow but enjoyable. I am also thinking about going offline to look through my massive collection of console games.
Simple graphics don't bother me however there has to be some reason. Stylized graphics are an entirely different thing from games that just plain look bad. Of course, the distinction between "stylized" and "bad" is pretty subjective.
Greg Waller: I have been focusing a lot of my time and energy towards WAR lately and intend to keep this trend going throughout the weekend , as my new zealot tackles Badlands through Tier 3. Regarding the bonus question: Eye candy is not make a great game. If the gameplay is more enjoyable than the graphics, I'm willing to accept poor graphics.
Jef Reahard: I'll be playing Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock specifically, specifically Rush's 2112, since I experienced the joy of blasting my eardrums live in Atlanta last night. Yeah, I know music games are all the rage in 2007 but whatever. If I manage any MMOs it will be my normal AoC/EQII along with a small side dish called FFXIV.
Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle) Krystalle Voecks (@Krystalle) everything after upgrading my desktop so I foresee many, many hours of download and install fun this weekend. Aside from that I'm looking forward to more Vanguard for me as well as some time spent with the old Masquerade WoD sourcebooks.
Let's face facts: Graphics are our favorite thing to do. One Shots is a good example to that. However, I don't believe it's the only way to play games. Minecraft is successful because it's fun and lets people express their creativity and not because it's visually stunning.
Lisa Poisso (@emused): I'm looking through old WoW alts with my husband, deciding on a new combination of race and class for Cataclysm. In terms of graphics, I didn't think they were as important to me as they are until I went back to the original EQ. If EverQuest's graphics were upgraded to match current standards, I'd be playing it again in no time. However, as it stands, the graphics are a huge negative.
Patrick Mackey: My computer is having issues at the moment. If it is able to work, World of Tanks will be my next game. I'll be spending some time playing Champions as well. I heard through the grapevine that Demonflame is coming out on Friday, PTS.
StarCraft II is played at the lowest graphics settings. However, Minecraft fails because things aren't easily visible in that game. Visuals are supposed to show the player what's happening in the game. If that isn't clear then the game's art designers have failed.
