Watch music videos! The metaverse is coming to you.
Have you ever been to an event in the metaverse? You should, judging by the new category that has been added to the MTV Video Music Awards. The VMAs will award a Moon Person for "Best Metaverse Performance" this year, but it's not known whether the award will be presented online or in person.
The nominees are Ariana Grande, BLACKPINK, BTS Charli XCX Justin Bieber and Twenty One Pilots. Yes, your faves have been performing in the metaverse.
Each artist has put their own spin on their metaverse concert. Ariana Grande performed a space-themed show in Fortnite and BLACKPINK brought their "pretty wild" style to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Mobile. BTS sang their English-language chart-toppers "Butter" and "Permission to Dance" on an arena in Minecraft where the boys' boxy avatars tried to recreate their iconic dance moves. In the meantime, Charli XCX and Twenty One Pilots both attended Roblox concerts. (It is important to note that Charli XCX's performance was a result of her collaboration with Samsung.) Justin Bieber also put on an appearance at Wave the virtual entertainment platform.
They are not the only performers in the metaverse. Virtual and metaverse-themed concerts were popular during the pandemic when live performances in person were put off. However, online and virtual performances are here to stay, especially as the metaverse becomes more engrained in our everyday lives.
The recognition at the VMAs suggests metaverse performances may even be a major part of the music industry. It's only time to see.
