Blizzard has begun legal action against World of Warcraft's largest and, perhaps, most effective private server, Nostalrius. Nostalrius is a Blizz-like Vanilla WoW server (in PvP and PvE varieties)-it replicates the original World of Warcraft (opens in new tab) as closely as it can, the key difference being its ability to support approximately 11,000 concurrent players. It's a remarkable achievement that will go dark on April 10th.
"Yesterday, we received a notice of formal notice from US and french lawyers acting on behalf of Blizzard Entertainment, who are preparing to go on trial against our hosting company OVH and ourselves in less than a week from now," the dev team writes (opens in new tab). "This is the definitive end of Nostalrius in its current form."
It's a tragic experience for me, made worse by the fact Nostalrius doesn’t have a leg. Unlike some private servers, Nostalrius never charged a dime however World of Warcraft is ActiBlizzard's property and that's in terms of the legal process goes.
Nostalrius is an archive of the past: a beautifully nostalgic record of how a world was like. It's a museum work that passionate fans have created without any official alternatives. The Nostalrius devs haven't quite given up, though.
The post continues "We will continue to provide publicly everything needed to create your own Nostalrius," "Today is also the day that Nostalrius will become a community-driven platform in the truest sense. We will release the source code and anonymized player data (encrypting individual account information) and let the entire community can decide the future of Nostalrius. If you wish us to do so, we will be in the background but will not be in the lead.
Wow servers
They also request Blizzard (opens new tab) to ensure the longevity of the server. There are currently 20,000 signatures at the time of writing. If there isn't an unforeseen event, Nostalrius will vanish at 23:00 CET+1 on April 10.
