Not satisfied with mere bajillions, Minecraft starts racking up more sales this week as it is released as a downloadable on Xbox One - and perhaps PS4 too. The Xbox One release date is locked in for Friday 5 September the day that 360 owners of Mojang's sandbox game will upgraded to a PS4 version for $5 and $5/PS4 Microsoft notes the upgrade applies regardless of whether you have an original disc or download copy. The full price version costs $20/PS16.
Although the PS4 release date isn't yet confirmed, Mojang's Daniel Kaplan tweeted saying that "Sony gamers can look forward to an exciting Minecraft surprise soon...or perhaps sooner?" That tease followed an PlayStation France tweet that claimed the PS4 version will release today, although no other Sony channels have confirmed that. We'll notify everyone as soon as we find out a date for the PS4 version.
Update The PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft seems to have been launched in the EU. There's no confirmation on when the game will launch in North America or other territories. [Image: 4J Studios]
For the Vita version, it look likely to be released this week. 4J Studios, the porting team, announced last week that they had "more work" to do before submitting Vita builds to Sony for certification.
New Minecraft versions include Minecraft worlds that are up to 36 times larger in size than the last-generation version. They also have longer draw distances. Love PS3 and Xbox 360 owners have the option of importing their Minecraft worlds into the Xbox One and PS4 versions and vice versa.
This announcement is coming at the same time that Mojang released Minecraft1.8 on PC. It's the update that's been being developed for the longest time at the Swedish studio at 300 days. It's not surprising that it's quite massive, with a myriad of new features which you can read about here. Highlights include new Guardian or Endermite mobs, tempered by the introduction - 'd’awww – rabbits. There are also killer bunnies that are less d’awww, but still quite d’awww. [Image: Mojang]
