Online Banking Apps, Including ANZ And Commonwealth Downin Outage

Internet banking for Australian banks has been shut down as a global outage affects websites and apps.

The websites of the major banks, including ANZ and Commonwealth Bank were timing out for customers on Thursday afternoon.

As a result of an outage across the globe that hit apps and websites, internet banking for Australian banks has been affected

Bank of Melbourne and Westpac were also reported as not accessible to customers, as well as banks in New Zealand.

A message on the ANZ app said to customers"Sorry, something went wrong. If you require assistance you can call us anytime.'

Some ATMs were also being reported out of action too with reports of machines in stores failing in the outage.

A problem at the international content delivery network platform Akamai - which supplies the backbone of major online services - is believed to be involved in the crash.

Some ATMs were reported to be out of commission as well, with reports of ATMs in stores malfunctioning during the outage.

Information from the Internet watchdog downdetector.com.au revealed the extent of the downtime, with all major banks affected as well as blue chip companies such as Telstra and Optus.

Amazon, Minecraft, Australia Post and the NBN website were also among the victims of the crash, as per the website.

Services began to resume service at 3.35pm on Thursday, approximately 90 minutes after first reports of problems.

However, Virgin Australia's website was down despite the return of other sites.

Australian CDN company peakhour.io said the latest issue that hit major companies underlined the possibility that anyone could be affected by an internet outage.

A Content Delivery Network is a global cloud-based computer network designed to improve the speed, security, and reliability of websites owned by their customers.

Peakhour co-founder Daniel D'Alessandro explained that CDNs often create many copies of their websites for their customers, and then share them and cache them around the world.

"People browsing a website will get it from their closest cache. This makes the site appear faster and more responsive due to the elimination of performance limitations such as distance and bandwidth.

CDNs can also boost website reliability. Users won't often notice if the website is down for a while, as long as the caches remain operational.

"Many CDN providers also offer cyber security services that block the attack traffic close to where it's sourced. This prevents it from reaching the target.

However, hackers often attempt to bring websites and apps down by a technique called DDOS which stands for distributed denial of service - where they orchestrate a mass surge of traffic at specific weak points in the network in order to overwhelm it.

He added, "Akamai is a venerable and well-respected business however, as we've witnessed two times this week, outages can happen to anyone.

'The fact that so many major organizations, as well as the critical services they deliver across Australia are all destroyed at the same time, regardless of the reason, is a sign of a pressing need for redundancy.

Companies that send their traffic through a third-party or a CDN or DDOS protection, all need an A-Plan, just like any other crucial element of their IT infrastructure.
