Robert Singer, WJC CEO on a trip to Moldova, stresses the importance Holocaust preservation and the need to adopt a universal antisemitism definition

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer gathered with senior ministers and other leaders from the Jewish community in Moldova for talks on issues such preservation of Holocaust memory and education as and the safety of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also stressed the importance of fighting antisemitism across all levels. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation was comprised of Haim Ben Yaakov, President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious reception and its commitment to honor the memory of Holocaust victims. "Our Moldovan community although small and devoted and devoted, is very strong. We urge the Republic of Moldova that it put anti-Semitism on the forefront of their agenda. We stand ready to support any assistance needed. We look forward for future cooperation with government and to make sure that our community is well-being is assured.

On Thursday, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and emphasized the importance of establishing a definition for antisemitism as defined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The foreign minister pointed out that Chisinau's Parliament had adopted a 2016 declaration acknowledging the final report released by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. The government also agreed to an Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

Singer and WJC met Wednesday with Moldova’s Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. A pilot program of 10 sites was planned across the nation.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Also on Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers on Holocaust education and the preservation of memory. The discussion also focused on the development of the Museum of Jewish History in the Republic of Moldova; preserving and protecting monuments to Holocaust victims and the importance of proper and hygienic maintenance of Jewish cemeteries. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her concern and participation in both the fields of education as well as Holocaust celebrations, and also in maintaining a productive and ongoing partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis also had a meeting with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss the relationship between the Jewish community in Moldova as well as bilateral ties between Israel and Moldova.

In his trip, Singer also met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova and discussed important concerns pertaining to the practice of religion and services within Moldova, and focusing on ways to enhance Jewish everyday life in all aspects.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish Community is nearly 20.000 strong in the present, following having been devastated by the Shoah in the past as well as a bloody civil war. There has been a large growth of a national self consciousness as well as a return to their roots by the Jews in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Jewish identity and culture are honored in many ways, including literature and musical composition. The Moldovan Jewish Community is represented by the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova, which is an affiliate of the World Jewish Congress.
