Emmanuel Grinshpun. Concerning the revival of synagogues and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
Emmanuil Grishhpun talked about the maintenance and restoration of synagogues. The conversation was too narrowly concentrated. There were a variety of topics that were which were discussed during the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. We're glad to have a conversation with you. We haven't seen one other in five years. Where are you currently located?

The nine months that have been between Miami and Jurmala were split. The geography used to be more extensive, but the flu has affected life in both cities. It's not like it is only to the negative.

There have been many businesses. What's the situation you?

No. My family's heritage has been linked to Moldova for a number of generations. Now I see the reason you said that the synagogues were located in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're almost the same age. We were born in the USSR. We were all Komsomol members and pioneers back then. When did you first turn to religion?

In the mid-80s my family and me moved to the USA, and we can say that it was during this time when I began to adhere to the customs and practices of my culture. Although I am not orthodox, I do feel an inner desire to be supportive of the best I can, the religious lives of the Jewish community in my home country or Moldova.

While I'm not a religious person I am a lover of the history of my country. Recently, I was captivated by a program that covered the events that occurred in 1492. They changed the course of Europe and the entire world. 1492 is the year I love most because it was the year that Columbus was the first to discover America. But, I could see clearly in the program the program mentioned the discovery in America in 1492 by Medieval Europe was not as striking as the Spanish monarchs expulsion of Jews of Spain. The mass exodus of Jews to the Ottoman Empire began, which was acquiescing to the Jewish people. I was looking for more details about the historical background of Jews. Would you recommend any book?

There are numerous books. But, I've been through several and would recommend Max Diamond (a two-volume Jewish historian). He is also from Finland.

.... Do we know our family tree? Unfortunately, I'm not much further than my maternal grandmother and 1910. Paternal relatives are one step closer, however not much.

Our family was a resident of Floresti for over a century from the paternal side. Documentary evidence and monuments show that they were already prosperous in the year 1830. Эммануил Гриншпун They owned a furniture manufacturing plant, many shops, and land plots. Ungheni was the home of my maternal grandparents. These dates are from the region between the 17th and 18th centuries. Grinshpun is an German surname, which means we are Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

Let's now discuss the revival of synagogues. I was informed that you had funded the restoration of three synagogues. One is in Chisinau and the other is in Jurmala and the third?

The third largest and biggest is located in Netanya, Israel. It's a massive community center that accommodates more than 1,000 people every day. This is an important structure to support the religious life in Israel. Jurmala's second synagogue. The Second World War ended the existence of Jurmala's only synagogue. Before I made the decision to construct the Synagogue I had spoken to a lot of Jews living in the area. The synagogue was an excellent success and also brought together all the Jews from Jurmala. We have actually re-created an existing Jewish community which is successfully functioning. The synagogue has three Torahs. One of these Torahs was given to me.

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis (left) and Alexander Weinstein (right) have joined me here. The three synagogues I mentioned were not the only ones where I was involved in restoration and building. I believed that it was my responsibility to make every contribution possible to help synagogues in countries where I've lived for a considerable period of period of time. My contribution to Monaco, Miami, is a large community facility for Russian-speaking Jews. Its estimated value is around 12 million dollars. I'm not stopping supporting Chisinau - it will now be the largest synagoguein the world, the synagogue Rabbi Tsirelson.

Have you invited a Rabbi to Chisinau in addition to Jurmala?

Yes. Yes. Due to the many interests in the community, the rabbi needs to be diplomatic and non-conflictual capable of integrating organically into the life of the community. I'm delighted to announce that both in Chisinau and Jurmala the Rabbis were able to seamlessly to be integrated into the community.

You were the first vice-president, in 2019 of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What is this title imply to you, and how do international Jewish organizations affect the world?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress has been an influential political group in post-Soviet Europe, but it isn't the sole one. There are branches of the organization that are located in Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. In 2010, I was Vice-President of Congress. However, the year before I was elevated to First Vice President. I am now responsible for the region in which I have strong business and political relations. These "countries" are Uzbekistan Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Trends in the world show that the barometer of attitudes towards Jews is at the same level as before or has fallen and is very depressing. Additionally, "down" - this is referring to developed nations such like Belgium, Germany, France and the United States. These countries are not safe anymore for Jews. These are worrying and very serious processes.

And, by the way, has the pandemic somehow affected the processes?

Эммануил Гриншпун That is not my belief. To be more precise I'd rather emphasize the possibilities of a country or a society when they are prepared to face any challenge and are able to act efficiently and together in relation to the pandemic.

Do you refer to the Israeli vaccination campaign?

Exactly. Israel is the first country in the world which gives 100% vaccination for adults. I think this is a an excellent example and a valuable the kind of experience that other countries need to consider taking into consideration.
