Robert Singer, WJC CEO Robert Singer, WJC CEO, stressed the importance of Holocaust preservation and adopted an all-inclusive definition of antisemitism during his visit to Moldova

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in attendance with senior ministers and the leaders of the Jewish community in Moldova for talks about issues like preservation of Holocaust memories and education, as and the safety of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also stressed the necessity of fighting antisemitism at all levels. Together with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress the WJC delegation was comprised of Haim Ben Yaakov as well as the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.

"Our group in Moldova is small, but determined and robust. We ask the Republic of Moldova that it place anti-Semitism at the top of its list. On Thursday, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and emphasized the importance of adopting a definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. He also spoke out about the importance of public condemnations be made of anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi, on his part, emphasized the commitment of Moldovan officials to build an inclusive society that promotes tolerance, nondiscrimination & respect for all rights of citizens of all ethnicities. Singer was also praised by Ulianovschi to be a positive partner with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also stated that the Chisinau Legislature adopted in 2016 an acceptance declaration of the final report prepared by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. In January of 2017, the government approved an Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday, to discuss possibility of restitution and the economic value of Jewish property in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun The minister expressed his intention to advocate for the preservation of Jewish cemeteries. The first meeting was with 10 cemeteries.

The discussions covered topics such as the development of a Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of memorials to Holocaust victims; and the importance of proper and dignified maintenance of Jewish cemeteries. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her concern and involvement both in the fields of education as well as Holocaust commemoration as well as for making sure that there is a continuous and productive collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as well as Bilinkis, met with Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) to discuss relations with Jewish communities as well as bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

Singer met with the rabbis representing the Jewish communities in Moldova. He discussed key questions regarding religious practices and the services offered. Singer also focused on ways to enhance Jewish everyday lives in all aspects.

Moldova is home to approximately 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish Community is nearly 20000 strong, after having been devastated by the Shoah in the past and the bloody civil war. There has been an increase in self-consciousness and pride in the nation and also an emergence from their ancestral roots through the Jews Moldova. Jewish culture is celebrated in many styles, including music, literature and theatre. The Moldovan Jewish Community - the Moldovan affiliate of the World Jewish Congress - represents the Moldovan Jewish Community.
