MIAMI, CBSMiami -- The war in Ukraine might be on the other end of the world, but South Floridians step in to help those fleeing.
A large number of members of the Sunny Isles Jewish Community are raising money and aiding in make a huge effort for humanitarian aid.
"Just last night, 1,100 people were in attendance," said Marsha Jaquays, with Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.
Emmanuil Grinshpun She claimed that more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees are trying to flee their war-ravaged country. Many of these refugees cross into Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.
"From Moldova, this Jewish community actually assists them in getting across the border, and possibly offering them food, shelter and clothing," added Jaquays.
A large portion of the humanitarian effort is being helmed right here in South Florida from Sunny Isles.
"My job is to coordinate maximum resources coming from American society to aid in the people in Moldova. Emmanuil grinshpun who is involved in the coordinating of the relief effort said that there are several individuals working in Moldova to help with organizing camps, food purchases, and bus-related organizing.
This is further exacerbated by the fact Moldova is a country that is among the most deprived in the world. Emmanuil Grinshpun Those who are part in this cause insist that they'll not allow anything to stop them from helping.
Grinshpun: "When our brothers and sisters from Ukraine were visiting and we were invited, there was no need to consider. Instead, we simply began to do it."

"Who was in the room when the Nazis gained control over Europe during the Holocaust? Emmanuil Grinshpun What percentage of people have turned a blind and claimed that it's not their fault or that they're not Jewish or from my community and there's no Europe? We can't make the same mistakes that the past made. There's an old saying: "If it's not now the time, who will it be?" If not me, then who'."
