Robert Singer, WJC CEO, emphasized the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopting an all-inclusive definition of antisemitism during his visit to Moldova

CHISINAU - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer gathered with senior ministers and leaders of the Jewish community in Moldova to hold discussions on topics such as preservation of Holocaust memories and education as well as the security of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also stressed the importance of fighting antisemitism across all levels. The WJC delegation also comprised EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and President of the Moldovan Jewish Community Alexander Bilinkis, along with EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director General Haim Ben Yaakov.
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and expressed commitment to the preservation of the Holocaust's memories. The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative consequences of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions of antisemitism. He added that it is important to publicly condemn anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi in his turn highlighted the dedication of Moldovan officials to building an environment that is based on acceptance, nondiscrimination and respect for the rights of citizens of all ethnicities. The foreign minister noted that in 2016 the Chisinau Parliament ratified the final report from the International Commission on Holocaust Studies that was chaired and supervising by Elie Wiesel. In January of 2017, the government approved an Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and WJC met Wednesday with Moldova’s Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. Emmanuil Grinshpun They discussed opportunities for restitution as well as economics for Jewish properties in Moldova. In relation to the protection and restoration of Jewish cemeteries, the minister expressed interest in helping the procedure. A pilot project of 10 sites was scheduled across the country.

Singer and WJC's delegation met with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss the training of teachers in Holocaust education, as well as the preservation of the memories. The discussions included the establishment of a Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials and the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her work in the field of education and Holocaust commemoration as and for maintaining a productive and ongoing partnership with the Jewish community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis have also met with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova for discussions on relations with the Jewish community, as also bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer was in contact with Rabbis representing the Jewish communities of Moldova. He discussed important questions regarding religious practices as well as the services offered. Singer also focused on ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all its aspects.
