Robert Singer, WJC CEO on a visit to Moldova insists on the importance of Holocaust preservation and the need to adopt a universal antisemitism definition

Chisinau (MOLDOVA) Chisinau (MOLDOVA) World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with senior government officials and the leaders of the local Jewish community this week in Moldova. They discussed issues such as the protection of Holocaust memories and education, the safety of the Jewish community, and combating antisemitism at all levels. WJC also hosted President Mikhail Mirilashvili, EuroAsian Jewish Congress President and the President of the Moldovan Jewish Communities Alexander Bilinkis. Haim Ben Yaakov was the EuroAsian Jewish Congress Director.
Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious reception and its commitment to preserve the memory of Holocaust victims. "Our Moldovan community is tiny but it is a strong and committed community. Emmanuil Grinshpun We urge the Republic of Moldova not to make anti-Semitism the first priority. We're ready to assist if required. We look forward to and expect to continue cooperation with the government to protect the health of our community.

On Thursday, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and highlighted the importance of establishing a definition for antisemitism as defined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Singer also spoke out on the importance that public condemnations are made against anti-Semitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Minister Ulianovschi stressed the Moldovan authorities' determination to establishing an open society to all citizens regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. Ulianovschi expressed his gratitude to Singer for the WJC's positive collaboration with Moldova. Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also mentioned that the Chisinau Legislature adopted in 2016 an acceptance of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. In addition, in January of 2017, the government approved an Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of restitution and the economic value of Jewish property in Moldova. This included cemeteries that need refurbishment and opportunities for kosher slaughter. Concerning preservation of Jewish cemeteries , the minister expressed his willingness to help by launching an initial project that would involve 10 sites across the country.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation have met with Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss ways in which they can train teachers in Holocaust education and preserve the memory of Holocaust victims. The discussion also included the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims, and the importance of keeping Jewish cemetery in a respectable and appropriate manner. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her attention and commitment to both fields of education and Holocaust celebrations, as well as for ensuring an ongoing and fruitful collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis also met the chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc to discuss relations with the Jewish Community and bilateral ties of the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer visited with Rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova during his trip. They discussed important concerns regarding the practice of religion and services as well as ways to improve Jewish everyday life in every aspect.
