Apple today announced some updates to the Apple TV platform at its WWDC keynote. New apps coming include Sling TV (finally), Fox Sports, the French streaming service Molotov and the Minecraft: Story Mode game. Apple is also updating the remote app for iPhone. It functions similar to the hardware remote. It offers navigation using touch and Siri voice search. You can also use the keyboard to input data and control the accelerometer. For the hardware it has a new feature called "Live Tune in" will allow you to instantly switch between livestreaming channels such as Disney, ESPN and more. Minecraft crafting recipes There's also a dark theme available, and Automatic App downloads mean that when you install a universal application on your iPhone or iPad, it will be there on your Apple TV too.
Apple has even addressed the issue of signing into all of these network TV Everywhere apps with Single sign-on. Sign in once with your details and you'll be authenticated in all apps that support it. This is applicable to both Apple TV and mobile iOS devices.
Once a user has signed to one app from a network, any other app that is available on Apple TV from participating pay-TV providers will automatically sign the user into all other supported apps requiring authentication.
In the single sign-on process, customers can view the entire list of authenticated applications that a pay-TV provider offers to more easily discover the apps, download and watch all their favorite video channels.
This technology can be utilized by any app on the network to allow single sign-on , and to make it easier for their viewers.
Single sign-on will be accessible on both Apple TV and iOS.
Apple is bringing HomeKit (ReplayKit) and PhotoKit (PhotoKit) to tvOS. Developers now have the capability to tie home automation features to TV apps, pull photos from the photostream, and many other options. With ReplayKit (already available on iOS 9), they can record and live broadcast through apps, which means we could see Twitch-like features become popular on Apple TV, or maybe even DVR-ish streaming caching. Today's developer preview includes all the new features, and should be available to all users this autumn.
