Dünyanın en önemli spor olayı olarak kabul edilen Yaz Olimpiyat Oyunları, dört yılda bir
Çeşitli ülkelerde yapılmaktadır.
Başlangıçta, ilk on üç olimpiyat boyunca oyunlar yalnızca koşudan oluşuyordu.
Daha sonra uzun mesafe koşusu, pentatlon, boks, atlı arabayla yarış, güreş ve zırhlı yürüyüş oyunları da yarışmalara dahil edildi.
İlk modern olimpiyat Atina’da, 1896 yılında yapılmıştır. Türkiye, olimpiyatlara ilk kez 1907 yılında davet edildi ve 1908 yılında Olimpiyat Oyunlarına katıldı.
Olimpiyat bayrağı, beyaz bir zemin üzerinde birbirine geçmiş beş halkadan oluşmaktadır.
Bir aradayken dünya birliğini ifade eden bu halkaların her biri, bir kıtayı temsil etmektedir. Bayrak, açılış törenlerinde stada getirilir, stada girişinin ardından göndere çekilir oyunlar boyunca burada dalgalanır.
Kapaniş töreninde yarıya indirilmesi, oyunların sona erdiğini gösterir.
Oyunlara ev sahipliği yapan kentin yöneticisi, bayrağı bir sonraki olimpiyatların ev sahibi olan kentin yöneticisine teslim eder.
