Minecraft sales have officially reached 200 million, with 126 million people playing the game monthly. Microsoft is releasing the latest figures on sales as Mojang Studios celebrates 11 years since the first Minecraft alpha build was originally released.
Microsoft also saw an increase in Minecraft usage during this pandemic. Minecraft saw an increase of 25% in users and a 40% increase in multiplayer sessions last month.

In 2016, sales for Minecraft exceeded 100 million, and the game hasn't decreased in popularity. A surge in YouTubers' interest and nostalgia-driven gaming resulted in Minecraft remain king of YouTube statistics for viewership last year.
Microsoft acquired Minecraft maker Mojang about six years ago for $2.5 billion. At the time, it was selling more than 50 million copies across PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and other platforms. It was a wise acquisition by Microsoft, and the incredible sales growth and momentum ever since has kept players returning to the game for a long time.
Minecraft began as an idea from a bedroom. It was initially made available as an Java applet on an online forum. The game quickly caught the imagination of thousands of gamers who adored the idea of letting players create an environment through crafting and building constructions out of blocks. It has also created a massive community of people who make replicas of objects and YouTube tips on how to play Minecraft which are regularly shared with millions of users.
