Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs to Discourage Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strong stance against NFTs. The studio, which is owned by Microsoft has stated that integrations of NFTs into Minecraft are not something they would accept or allow.

"To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be used within our server and client applications, nor can Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset," Mojang said.

According to Mojang certain companies have developed "NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world skin packs and files." The studio suggests that there could be Minecraft "collectible" NFTs or that players could earn NFTs by doing things in Minecraft on a server, or earning them outside of the game.

Mojang claims that these practices promote digital exclusion and scarcity, which is against Minecraft's principles. "NFTs are not inclusive of all members of our community and create a semblance of the haves and the have-nots," the studio said. Mojang also says that NFTs are speculative and "encourages profiteering."

The blog post is worth reading in its entirety. It provides a variety of critiques of NFTs and blockchain projects in a clear and understandable language. (There are quite a few more quotes that I could have included.)

Valve has also taken a firm stand against NFTs and blockchain games on Steam. Most of the gaming community has rejected NFTs. 360 degrees all the way around Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative was launched. Epic Games said last year it was "open" to blockchain games that are available on the Epic Games Store, and the first blockchain game came to the store in June.

While Mojang does not completely shut the door to incorporating blockchain in the future, it ends by declaring that "we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft right now."
