How to Play Classic Doom with Gorgeous Ray Tracing Effects

The original 1993 Doom, the progenitor of more than three decades of shooters, is still very much alive and well. While the game has seen ported to nearly every platform, it's not just a meme. Mods for the community, such as Brutal Doom, which have access to the source code of the original game, have helped keep the original game relevant well after it was overtaken by newer games. The latest addition to the cult shooter is newfangled lighting effects that ray-trace.

This isn't the first time we have seen high-tech lighting juxtaposed with low-tech images. The well-knownly bloated Minecraft comes with official Nvidia-branded RTX support and Nvidia has rebuilt Quake II to show off what full-blown path tracing can look like. Every PC player is able to download the Doom mod for no cost. It's also particularly dramatic in Doom's sci-fi setting which is which is a Martian colony that is infested by hoards of hungry demons. Realistically rendered shadows and reflections of plasma ammunition, fireballs, and pools of lava showcase just how lighting can be done with good lighting, even for Doom's incredibly basic polygon-based environments and sprite enemies.

You can watch those effects in action in the video from PCWorld's YouTube channel below, and an explanation of how to activate the mod and play Doom with the gorgeous lighting yourself.

Sultim Tsyrendashiev is the programmer behind PrBoom. He's also added support for Nvidia DLSS and other popular tweaks like an in-game flashlight. To run the mod at its best you'll need a powerful PC, but DLSS can to ease the load. The original three episodes of Doom are fully playable but you'll have to dig into the settings file to get the best performance on your system. 360 degrees all the way around Mod files and the source code are available for download on Github today.
