British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The video game Minecraft will recreate the British Museum in London, complete with all its exhibits.

The project is part of the Museum of the Future scheme which aims to increase the appeal of the institution.

Numerous real-world organizations have made maps using Minecraft such as Ordnance Survey, the Danish government, and Ordnance Survey. They want to educate young people of their work.

Last week, Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokeswoman for the museum said the project was in "an initial stage of planning" and that the "build" had not yet begun.

She added that the organisation was intending to recruit members of the public to assist with the "construction".

The British Museum

The first museum that was a public institution in the world, founded in 1753.

The most visited tourist attraction in the UK.

Six million people visit the museum every year. Minecraft java The museum holds eight million objects.

Its natural history collections were moved to a building in South Kensington in the 1880s which would become the Natural History Museum

Its instantly identifiable Great Court, designed by Lord Foster, is the largest covered public space in Europe

One employee from the British Museum posted details about the project on Reddit and requested volunteers.

The game received enthusiastic reactions from Minecraft fans from all over the all over the world.

Initial stages

The first step of the process will be to digitally design the Great Court and facade of the building.

The institution hopes that this stage will be completed in time for a public discussion titled changing public dialogues around museum collections in the digital age. The debate will take on the 16th of October.

Ovum's Ovum gaming analyst Ed Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's move towards Minecraft could make it "perceived to be something fun" and could be an educational tool for a young crowd.

He said, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." "You have to build it brick by brick".

He added that the institution deserves praise for crowdsourcing the project "as it transforms it into something that is collaborative" and could further engage young Minecraft gamers.

He added, "What an awesome project it would have to be asked to construct the Elgin Marbles from Minecraft."

People who are interested in donating to the British Museum's project can sign up on Reddit.
