There is an easy way to check the status of the realms at any time.
Blizzard's official Realm Status page is available on the website. It lists all realms in both the WoW Classic and modern games. Each realm is listed along with their type and size, population along with their timezone, location, and type. You can also change the region by clicking on the top right. To the left of that is an icon for status that indicates whether or not the realm is accessible to you. This is a key place to look at when you're trying to log into your account on the day of maintenance or a launch day for a patch.
If you do a quick search for WoW realm status, you'll see a few sites that look exactly like the official site. Although I wouldn't recommend them over the official site for WoW realm status, they're an excellent source to see if Blizzard's page has gone down. Another method to determine whether or whether the realms are down is log in and seeing the type of message you receive. Sometimes, you'll be able look up a live listing of all the realms as well as their statuses. This was a crucial step to gain access to WoW Classic for name reservations last year.
There are also people complaining about servers not working on Twitter and Discord. There's no one else in these moments of need. We all would like to log back in to complete our World Quests and leveling. Our collective effort will ensure that the servers will be back up faster next time there's an outage. I'm sure of it.
