Minecraft XBLA was Profitable within an Hour, Broke Digital Sale Records

Minecraft is digging its own grave with its latest release on XBLA - and by "grave" we refer to "lavish gold-plated throne rooms with an indoor pool as well as grape-feeding robots." Minecraft was profitable within an hour of its debut on XBLA, developer Markus "Notch" Persson tweeted today. This is in addition to the multimillion-dollar PC version that Notch developed.



Notch said that Minecraft sold more than 400,000 copies within 24 hours, based on the leaderboard participation figures. According to Microsoft, Minecraft sold more digital copies than any other XBLA game within the first day of launch and broke records for digital sales.



Notch tweeted earlier today that he had Minecraft sales numbers (turns out that they were the above leaderboard figures). This led to discussions about the inner workings of XBLA developer contracts and Fez's Polytron. Polytron hasn't been able to determine Fez's exact numbers even though the contract came out a month ago.



According to Polytron, "Standard procedure" means that you find out the value of your sale when your first check arrives three to four months later. Notch thought getting immediate numbers was normal however he stayed clear of contract negotiations and isn't sure what the law refers to and he reacted.



Polytron wrote that Minecraft also gets free updates. "This is something that every other developer on this platform is told is impossible." Notch replied: "We had to fight for it, and we got only a few. It's not clear why they don't like it."



We may have discovered Notch's hidden talent and the secret to his success: fighting for something in a contract, while avoiding contract negotiation and winning.

Microsoft today announced that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, the console adaptation of the immensely loved PC game developed by Mojang has surpassed all previous digital sales records, selling more than any other title within the first 24 hours on Xbox LIVE Arcade.



This comes on the heels of Trials Evolution, which similarly exceeded revenue sales figures on its debut day of sales, as the first game of the "Arcade Next" program.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios in conjunction with Mojang and Microsoft Studios, and introduces new gaming experiences like an exclusive crafting menu, game tutorials, and split-screen multiplayer. It also offers online multiplayer for up to eight players via Xbox LIVE.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is available on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 1600 Microsoft Points, and is the final game in the "Microsoft Studios Presents: Arcade NEXT" lineup that also includes Trials Evolution (Redlynx), Bloodforge (Climax) and Fable Heroes (Lionhead).
