The Minecraft Timeline

The story of Minecraft is like a fantastic movie script. Notch as the lead genius programmer, who, from an underdog (indie) position was the only person to change the game industry simply by doing what he enjoyed. And, making a lot of money during the process. He even made more money when he got fed up and sold Minecraft. Perhaps a film isn't necessary. It is well documented. And most people know the story. The majority of the story was reported on the internet. We have blogs, websites, forum posts, tweets and YouTube videos. Minecraft servers We don't have a timeline that traces the history of Minecraft (until today). I started to be more interested in Minecraft and its creator. Since it seemed like a fantastic story. One computer and one man revolutionized the world. My personal favorite type of story! And I clearly remember being awestruck on August 20th, 2011, when Notch participated in a game coding contest and live-streamed the entire event, which he did frequently. (Mind you, this link is a simplified version of the entire thing. It ran for 48 hours. This guy was different! The wonders of game design were revealed before your eyes. Way too fast to get it all however it gave an excellent understanding of what it means to make games. He and his PC with Java IDE Eclipse Eclipse and Paint.net. The same tools he used for creating Minecraft. (I later learned, trough that contest, that there are many skilled programmers similar to him. Not everyone strikes gold. However, many of them like Notch and others, aren't in it because of this.

Minecraft is a unique tale which is why I made one.

These are a few of the most interesting things about this timeline.

- Notch started working on Minecraft a few weeks before starting a new job (at jAlbum, which is the same software that this site also uses!) - It took a year of development before he quit his "real" job to focus on Minecraft. It was estimated that around 20.000 copies were sold by that point. The game was in its early stages. Very promising to say the least. The second half of 2010 and 2011 must have been a nightmare. They started the company around Minecraft: Mojang, hired many people, made a ton of updates to the game, released an additional game (completely different) and sat down with Valve, organised MineCon and had a lawsuit on their hands, and amidst all that they sold millions of copies of Minecraft! A lot of significant Minecraft things seem to be happening on June 1 for a couple of times in consecutive years (this also coincides with the birthday of Notch).

The Minecraft story isn't done yet. Minecraft is of course still active and setting records. But where Notch and Minecraft once were part of the same story they are now moving into separate timelines.

Whatever happens, the story of Minecraft will always be an inspiring tale and the impact it has had on the gaming and entertainment industry will be heard for many years to come. This video, which we discovered on Youtube in 2009, is more special.
