Minecraft's ray-tracing feature for Windows 10 has made its way out of beta for eight months following the feature was first made available to users to test. The look and feel of the sandbox game has been transformed by the addition ray tracing support to NVIDIA's RTX graphic cards. As we mentioned in our hands-on review earlier this year, the realistic lighting, reflections and shadows this feature provides make Minecraft feel more immersive. You'll be able experience the benefits of ray-tracing in the game if are playing on a computer equipped with one of NVIDIA GPUs that support ray tracing. The improvements it brings can only be seen in maps and worlds that use a special physically-based rendering texture pack, however you don't have to do anything to enable it as it's already turned on by default. Others who don't have the feature will see the worlds as normal visuals.
In its announcement, NVIDIA says ray tracing puts more stress on your GPU, so it uses its DLSS AI rendering technology to ensure that Minecraft with RTX can continue to run with at least 60 FPS at 1920x1080. More advanced GPU models (RTX 3080 and 3090) can run the game in 4K resolution at 60FPS or more.
You can download the worlds you can play using ray tracing on from the Marketplace or create your own with assistance from NVIDIA's starter pack for those who require. NVIDIA and Minecraft are also making two new worlds available for free: Colosseum RTX has already been released, and Dungeon Dash RTX will soon be available.
