Hello, here's your semi-frequent reminder that Minecraft is quite large. Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella revealed during the company's latest financial update that Mojang's build 'em up has surpassed 140 million monthly active users between January 1 to March 31. However, Minecraft's current engagement rate is 30% higher than the previous year.
Nadella adds that Minecraft creators have earned more than $350 million through "more than one billion downloads of mods, add-ons and other experiences within Minecraft". This doesn't include activity that isn't part of Microsoft's marketplace either.
The pandemic is likely to lead to an influx of players to Minecraft however there are a lot of other reasons driving interest as well. Mojang's take on Diablo, Minecraft Dungeons was released last year, and this year, Caves and Cliffs will be available in two parts. Mojang has previously explained why it chose to split the update into two parts to ensure quality, reduce technical complexity and keep the development team healthy. Expect to see some new mobs and blocks this summer, and even more complicated parts related to world generation during the holiday season.
Microsoft reports that it generated $41.7 billion in revenue last year, an increase of 19% over the previous year.
"Over a year into the pandemic, digital adoption curves aren't slowing down. They're increasing, and it's just the beginning," Nadella says.
