Have you ever wondered how Minecraft can create huge worlds that are full of tiny details, such as elaborate cliff faces and waterfalls? PBS' Game/Show is happy to explain it in a brand new video. You'll see that Mojang's game is based on procedural generation. This creates environments and objects that appear random, yet are governed by consistent rules. For instance mountains are usually filled with snow and rocky and low-lying areas are usually populated with grass and trees.
Perlin noise calculations are used to create rough textures for Minecraft. It starts out at a broad level by painting a basic topographical map, and adds "noise" through finer terrain details like trees, lakes and animals. Importantly, it gives you just enough freedom to create surprising delights, such as the intricate rock structure you see above . As in real life There's a reason to explore what's around the bend.
DEEP SPACE
Procedurally-generated game content certainly isn't new. Spelunky and the Diablo series make use of it to keep their environments current, while Borderlands uses it to generate unique weapons. It's crucial for the seemingly endless amount of worlds that exist in No Man's Sky. It's safe to say that Minecraft's dependence on math is what makes it different. Every game can be distinctive, and there's so much to discover and do that it could take many hours before you've explored every last nook and cranny.
