GlyphosateSecuring our food supply for generations to come Why farmers use Glyphosate as a sustainable crop fertilizer.
It's no secret that the global population is expanding. The world is projected to contain 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 The land available for farming in the world is not expanding at the same pace as ours. This poses serious problems for farmers who are responsible for producing sufficient high-quality food for Canadians and other countries around the globe.

Canada is currently the fifth-largest exporter of food globally.2 Canadian farmers are expected to play a significant role in supplying the world the food that it requires. They will need to be able to cater to an increasing demand.

Farmers are unable to meet this growing demand by themselves. Luckily, new tools and technology, including herbicides like glyphosate, are able to help farmers to control weeds efficiently and effectively, resulting in an environmentally sustainable and secure food supply.

グリホサート What exactly is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a versatile herbicide that is non-selective and has been used by land managers, farmers and gardeners around the world for more than 40 years. It works by blocking the enzyme that plants (in this case unwanted weeds) require to grow. The enzymes do not exist in humans or other animals.4 Thus, glyphosate is zero risk for any plant if it is applied correctly.

There are many other uses for glyphosate too. グリホサート Municipalities use it in urban green spaces to safeguard wildlife as well as the general public from the harmful effects of weeds.6 It is also employed on railways to keep conductors in view and to avoid fires.

Recently, there's been an increase in attention paid to the use of glyphosate in our everyday life. While it's important to be aware of the ingredients in our food, it is worth noting that over 160 international health regulatory bodies such as Health Canada, agree that the use of glyphosate in a safe manner for humans is feasible if it's done correctly.

グリホサート どくだみ In helping Canadians understand what glyphosate is and the way it is used and the critical function it plays in the production of food as well as sustainable agricultural practices, can help alleviate concerns about what is just one of the many tools farmers use to ensure we all have healthy, affordable, and readily available food items to eat.

Glyphosate: Why is it being used in agriculture?

The use of glyphosate-based herbicides benefits farmers, consumers and the natural environment. It is essential for efficient herbicides as well as sustainable food supply as well as environmental sustainability. Let's look at each of these benefits in greater detail.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (9 U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization) Farmers across the world suffer losses of between 30-40% and 60 percent of their crops every year to weeds and pests. This is a massive cost for farmers, especially considering their crops as their livelihood.

Farmers are able to rely on the tools they count on every year. Applying glyphosate on fieldsparticularly with glyphosate-tolerant crops is a proven way to prevent destructive weeds from taking over crops.9 To date there is no other weed-control method offers the same level of efficiency, both in terms of practical and economically.

Crops Vs. Weeds: The battle of their lives

Glyphosate can give crops a chance to beat up to 30,000 weed species in exchange for space, light, nutrients, and water.

Canada and the world have many benefits Affordable, abundant food

The number of people living in Canada is growing and 50% of our agricultural land is likely to be unusable in 40 years. This is leading to food shortages. Canadians can pay up to 55% more for food if they don't adopt modern farming techniques including the use of Glyphosate.11

The food we love will be more difficult to find. Plant science will allow farmers to continue growing our favourite foods of the day for many years.

Glyphosate does more than reduce the growth of weeds. It also helps reduce the cost of food at the supermarket. Glyphosate also serves to assist farmers to take care of their biggest asset, which Cherilyn Jolly Nagle from Mossbank, Saskatchewan, says is their land.

Equipment for crop protection, such as glyphosate may be used to protect crops against disease and pests. Farmers are able grow.

42% More grains such as wheat or corn

72% more fruit

83 percent more potatoes and other vegetables12

The benefits are evident. But is glyphosate actually safe?

It is important to remember that all pesticides should be used according to the directions on the label. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) inspects crops for residues of pesticides and makes sure farmers are using it correctly. The Pest Management Regulatory Agency, (PMRA) is a regulatory agency that provides guidelines, product submission evaluations, approvals (or rejects) and one of the strictest evaluation procedures in the world.

Although the regulatory agencies are responsible for ensuring farmers use approved herbicides safely Farmers and manufacturers also are crucial in ensuring that glyphosate has been properly and safely used to avoid any harm to the environment, animals, humans, and other people.

The use of precision technology and farming has allowed farmers to take greater control over the use of glyphosate. They are also able to pinpoint exactly where and how the glyphosate is used.

It is rare for pesticide residues to be present in food items. http://############################################################################################################################################################################################################################################################### However, it could be harmful when it is. CFIA makes sure that farmers apply herbicides in a safe and effective manner and keep within the set limits for residue.

Glyphosate is an ingredient used in sustainable agriculture practices.

グリホサート Farmers utilize herbicides, such as glyphosate, as part of an integrated approach to pest and weed management. That means they use more than just herbicides to control weeds. Glyphosate has enabled them to adopt conservation tillage / no-till practices that have long-term benefits to soil, air and the surroundings as a whole which include:

- The reduction or elimination plowing/tilling land

- Cut CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon inside the soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing water runoff and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory authority anywhere in the world currently considers glyphosate to be a cancer risk to humans at the levels to that humans are exposed." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations How to Feed the Planet in 2050

It's more crucial than ever to ensure that Canadian farmers are able to access the technology tools, resources, support and equipment they require to satisfy the food supply needs of a growing population.

The most efficient agricultural, food safety , and pest control practices will ensure that farmers have food safe and plentiful. Glyphosate is just one of many tools they will use in order to ensure that Canadians and other people across the world have access to nutritious and affordable food both now and in the near future.
