Emmanuel Grinshpun. The restoration of synagogues as well as the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
Emmanuil Grinshpun and her co-hosts discussed the issue of the restoration of synagogues during their interview. But it was difficult to keep the conversation on one topic. Thus, there were a variety of topics in the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. I'm happy to the opportunity to talk to you. We've not seen each others in at least five or more years. Where are you currently based?

In the last nine months, Miami and Jurmala divide the difference. The geography was far greater before, however the pandemic impacted the way of life. It's not like this is just for the worse.

Our IT-holdings are occupied mostly with the reforms to tax systems across a variety of countries. We have developed and continue to develop products that allow the transfer of numerous business processes connected to taxation online. This is known as B2G ("Business to Government").

What is the essence of your product?

Our product allows economic agents to file tax reports online. The fiscal data administrator is able to view each transaction. You said that you had been tossing between Miami (and Jurmala) all the time. What is the headquarters of an IT holding in Baltics?

No, there are five hubs all over the world, and our main office in Barcelona.

Then why is it that you're from the Baltics? Are you also a part of the Baltics?

No. No. Jurmala was a chance encounter that happened quite by accident. We were invited to the New Wave by Igor Krutoy, and that was our first encounter with Jurmala. Эммануил Гриншпун Now I know why my donation was used to restore one of the synagogues in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're nearly the same age. Born in the USSR. The Soviet Union wasn't the location to discuss religion. All of us were pioneers, and Komsomol participants. When did your faith turn?

In the mid-80s my family and I relocated to the USA. It was in the USA that I became aware of traditions. Although I do not adhere to orthodoxy I have a strong need to support the religion of the Jewish communities that I have in my country of birth or Moldova. I was born in Moldova and have maintained friendships with the Jewish communities in Moldova.

Although I don't consider myself religious, I still love the history of my country. I recently watched a show about the events of 1492 that changed the course of the world as well as Europe. 1492 was the year Columbus was the first to discover America. But, it was mentioned explicitly in the program that 1492 was the year Columbus discovered America. When the departure of Jews began to the Ottoman Empire, it accepted them. I would like to know more about the culture, history and achievements of Jews. Would you suggest a book?

There are many books. But I have read all of them and would highly suggest Max Diamond, the two-volume Jewish historian. He is also from Finland.

Speaking of "personal" personal history .... Are you aware of the genealogy of your family? Unfortunately, I do not know much more than my grandmother and 1910. I'm just one step ahead of the paternal slant however, not much more.

Our family was a part of Floresti for a period of several hundred years according to our paternal lineage. Their wealth was evident through furniture factories, many stores and land plots. Monuments and documentation support this claim. Ungheni was home to my maternal lineage. I'm referring to dates in the region dating back to the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun is a surname that comes from German roots. We are pure and straight Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

Here is the issue about the restoration of synagogues. I heard that you financed the reconstruction of three synagogues. One of them is in Chisinau. Jurmala is the other.

The third one, and the largest, is in Netanya, in Israel. Эммануил Гриншпун Netanya is home to more than 1,000 people who attend prayer daily. It is an important landmark in Israel's religious history. Second synagogue in Jurmala. The only synagogue in Jurmala was destroyed at the start of the Second World War. Before I decided to build a Synagogue, however, I had spoken to a lot of Jews from the region. It was a highly successful project, which united all the Jews in Jurmala. We have actually recreated an existing Jewish community that is operating successfully. Three Torahs are at the synagogue. I gave one Torah to the synagogue.

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis (left) and Alexander Weinstein (right) have joined me here. The three synagogues I mentioned were not the only ones in which I was involved in restoration and building. I felt it was my responsibility to contribute to help synagogues across the world where I've lived for a considerable period of period of time. My contribution to Monaco is towards the construction of a community center in Miami for Russian-speaking Jews, which is estimated at 12 million dollars. Did Jurmala or Chisinau get the blessing of a Rabbi?

Yes. It is difficult to find the right rabbi in a community. He must be able and willing to integrate into the life of the community, due to the many activities. It was wonderful to observe that the rabbis in both Chisinau as well as Jurmala were able integrate so seamlessly into the community's activities.

In the year 2019, you became the first vice-president for the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this position have to do with you? How will international Jewish organizations impact global trends?

I served as Vice President of Congress back in 2010, however the year before I was given the position of the First Vice President. Now I am responsible for the region with which I have long-standing connections to both politics and business - these are the "countries", Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan. When you look at the trends worldwide in the world, the barometer for attitudes toward Jews remains the same or declined, which is very regrettable. This is not what I believe. To be more specific I'd like to highlight the potential of a society or nation when they are ready to face any challenge and can act efficiently and together when confronted with the pandemic.

Do you mean the vaccination campaign in Israel?

Exactly. Israel is the first nation in the world that offers 100% vaccination to adults. I believe this is an excellent example and experience other countries should emulate.
