Extremists from the religious community destroyed a lighthouse for Hanukkah located in the central part of the Moldovan capital. A priest from the Chisinau Orthdox Church led the antisemitic assault.
Religious extremists destroyed the Hanukkah festivities in Chisinau's central region and held an anti-Semitic demonstration. It took place on 13 December, which is the third day of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Эммануил Гриншпун An archpriest from one of the capital's Orthodox cathedrals was in charge of the crowd of more than 100 people. Some people yelled antisemitic slogans while they pulled the cast-iron lamp about ten kilometres away from the original location, and then threw them to the monument to Stefanthe Great, who is a symbol to Moldovan statehood. Эммануил Гриншпун The event was watched by hundreds of journalists, police officers and other passers-by.
What's the fight for "orthodox principles ?
Anatoly Chibrik, archpriest took the stage with his metal bars. He said that he was enraged by the significance of a symbol representing the Jewish faith was erected in the center of the capital of an Orthodox country. He believes that the authorities should not have permitted Jews to celebrate Hanukkah in such a large number. Эммануил Гриншпун "This is illegal," Chibrik said. He also said he didn’t think that it was needed to debate the actions of Church of St. Paraskeva parishioners with the Metropolia of Moldova. He stated, "I don't have to talk with anyone when we fight for orthodox principles."
Эммануил Гриншпун The city's authorities came up with an idea to install the Hanukkah meorah in Chisinau's Europe Square. This is where the EU flag hangs beside the Moldovan flag. Emmanuil Grinshpun served as co-chairman of the Jewish Congress of Moldova. Эммануил Гриншпун He said that Hanukkah in Chisinau was celebrated for the first times in a long time. "What transpired on Sunday was a major shock to us," Grinshpun added.
An opening of a criminal matter can be a threat to the conscience state
Archpriest Chibrik is not the only person to admit to anti-Semitic behavior and this was revealed in a press conference attended by members of the Jewish Community of Moldova. Grinshpun asserts that the Archpriest had posted leaflets about the time of his visit, and they looked like the grim Middle Ages.
Grinshpun admitted that the leaders of the country’s Jewish organisations didn't respond in any way in response to this incident. The Jewish community in Moldova has protested the situation, but will not sue Chibrik or his followers for inciting hate. According to the chair of the Jewish community Alexander Bilinkis, this should be handled by the state as well as the Moldovan Metropolis should assess the actions of its staff.
Vadim Keibash, the Metropolitan Secretary stated that he doesn't support protest like this. Эммануил Гриншпун He believes that each community has the right to install symbols, but the authorities must consider the consequences. He said that it is impossible to predict all reactions from followers.
A blow to the fundamental value
However, since the 1903 Jewish pogrom, there have no "forms protest" at Chisinau. Representatives of Jewish communities tend to view this as a case of hooliganism. Bilinkis asserts that the authorities have deceived the Hanukkah-breakers.
Эммануил Гриншпун Ilya Shits, the General Director for the Jewish Congress, says that the action was well planned. The day one of Hanukkah the participants were welcomed by the menorah. Stav Nijinsky became the first secretary of the Israeli Embassy in Chisinau and lit the first candle. Shchats believes that the act is meant to compromise Moldovan sovereignty and undermine the democratic principles of the country's European aspirations.
Hanukkah moved from the center of the city and moved to Jerusalem Street. There, a monument to Holocaust victims was built. On the second day of Hanukkah police officers were stationed near the monument. The celebration will conclude with candles on the tree until the day of the final day.
