Microsoft Reveals 'Minecraft' has an Astonishing 112 million Monthly Players

It's been apparent to anyone who has been paying attention that Minecraft has been seeing an increase in popularity recently however, now we can quantify it to some degree.

This week, Microsoft has told Business Insider that Minecraft has rocketed to 112 million monthly players which is a 20 million increase from the last time they released those figures in October 2018. The game has been around for a decade and is more relevant than ever.

Other than "it's good and people like it" there are any number of reasons for the current explosion of Minecraft. A new update was released in the midst of the 10th anniversary of the game and added lots of new content. PewDiePie, a 100 million-subscriber YouTuber, is credited for making Fortnite a part of the "influencer" scene. His channel was dedicated to Minecraft for the last few months. Then there's Fortnite's slow decline as players move on from the game's massive success to other games, like Minecraft.

Minecraft's rise is even greater when you consider that it's not free on most platforms, including Fortnite. Although some might credit Microsoft for putting it into the Xbox Game Pass as a move that has boosted its player base even more.

Fortnite seems to be aware that Minecraft is attracted by players. This is why we have seen the birth and dedication to constructing Creative Mode in the game. But Minecraft remains the original, and it should continue to capitalize on its popularity through future releases such as Minecraft Dungeons which is a combination of the original and Diablo-like dungeons, looting and dungeons.

The 2021 date for the release of "Demon Slayer Season 2' is finally established

Overall, the common refrain I hear from Minecraft players is that it's a game that people like to revisit after a while. In this case there was a snowball effect in which numerous players returned to the game together that it was as if old friends could all play the game simultaneously and have as much enjoyment today as they did 3-8 years ago.

Microsoft's $2.5 billion acquisition of Minecraft was a bit odd at the time, but they now own one of the most played games on the planet. I'm willing to bet that 112 million players per month is more than Fortnite currently has and, possibly, only competing with mobile games on that scale. It's awe-inspiring.

Expect Minecraft to live for a long time, and continue to be relevant with upcoming releases like Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth The AR game that will take aim at Pokemon Go in the next.
