Emmanuel Grinshpun. Concerning the revival of synagogues as well as the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress
Emmanuil Grinshpun spoke about the subject of restoration of synagogues in their interview. However, it was impossible to focus the discussion on a single topic. Therefore, there were many subjects discussed during the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. Эммануил Гриншпун It was great to have you meet. Эммануил Гриншпун I believe we haven’t seen one another for at least five years. Where in the world are you located now?

The nine months that have passed between Miami and Jurmala were split. The geographical boundaries were much larger in the past, but the epidemic impacted people's lives in a significant way. And, by the way, I can not say that only for the most severe.

There have been many different business lines. What's next?

Diversification hasn’t changed. The most important areas of development are in the fields of IT technologies, real estate, and food production.

First and foremost, our IT-holding has been involved in the reform of tax systems in a number of countries. But what about the region where the holding is based? Former countries of the USSR?

They are also available, however we have more agreements in Western as well as Eastern Europe as well as Latin America. We currently operate across 14 countries.

What is the core of your product?

Our software allows economic agents online to file tax returns and the fiscal administrator can view each transaction. Tax accounting and tax calculation can be done simultaneously. In the future it is possible to say that small and mid-sized businesses are not going to require accounting.

We are ready to present our product to Moldova. It is our belief that the Moldovan economy will benefit from automation. And in any case it is an irreversible step. In the near future, once there is a sense of clarity among the authorities and it's clear who makes the decisions and who makes the decisions, we'll resume the negotiations about our product.

You stated that you had been tossing between Miami and Jurmala throughout the year. Are you referring to the head office of an IT holding based in the Baltics

No, we have five hubs all over the world and headquarters in Barcelona.

Why then you should be thinking of the Baltics? Do you have roots there?

No. My family's history is tied to Moldova for many generations. If we are to keep our family names from the past, it's associated with Bessarabia. Jurmala came into our lives almost by chance and was not a very professional. Igor Krutoy invited them to the New Wave. It was their first trip to the New Wave. After winning many competitions and having a great time, they began to travel there each summer. Эммануил Гриншпун Miami's climate during the summer is not the best. We rented a property for several years, and therefore we have already acquired it.

Now I know the reason you mentioned that one synagogue was in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We are almost the same age. We were born in the USSR. It was not necessary to talk about religion back then. We were all pioneers and Komsomol members. What was the first time you turned to religious belief?

My family relocated to the USA in the mid-80s. In the USA, I started to follow customs and rituals. Although I am not religiously orthodox, I feel the inner urge to support the best I can, the religious lives of the Jewish community in my home country or Moldova.

Although I am not religious I love the history of my country. I recently watched a documentary about 1492 and how it changed Europe's destiny. 1492 was the year Columbus discovered America. It was apparent in the show that the discovery of America was initiated in 1492 but not from the Medieval European point of view. This was evident in the program that I watched. They were granted acceptance by the Ottoman Empire when the mass exodus of Jews to the Ottoman Empire. Here, I was looking for details about the history of Jews as a group. Do you have any recommendations for a book to me?

There are a lot of books to choose from, but I have read and recommend you a two-volume Jewish historian Max Diamond. By the way the fact that he is himself from Finland.

.... Are you conversant about your family's past? Unfortunately, I only know my grandmother and 1910. I'm just one step ahead of the paternal slant, but not much more.

On the paternal line, our family was in the Floresti region for a number of hundred years. There is evidence in the form of documents and monuments which show that by 1830, they were extremely prosperous with furniture factories, numerous stores, land plots. My maternal ancestors were in Ungheni. I'm talking about dates from the 17th-18th century. Эммануил Гриншпун Grinshpun is a German surname, so we're Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

Here is the issue of the restoration of synagogues. I was told that you funded the restorations of three synagogues. One is located in Chisinau One is in Jurmala, and the third?

The third, and also the largest one, is located in Netanya. It is home to over 1,000 people who pray daily. It is a significant object in the religious life of Israel. The second synagogue in Jurmala. The Second World War saw the destruction of the synagogue that was the only one in Jurmala. Before building a synagogue, I had conversations with local Jews. In the end, I decided that I would build the building and invite a rabbi on the site. It was a very successful project, which united all the Jews in Jurmala. We have actually recreated an existing Jewish community that is now working well. Three Torahs are in the synagogue. I gave one Torah to the synagogue.

and Chisinau

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis and Alexander Weinstein were my co-workers. But these synagogues aren't the only ones that I've participated in reconstruction or restoration. In all the countries where I've been for a long time I felt it was my duty to make a feasible contribution to the maintenance of synagogues. My current contribution is in Monaco which is where a huge community centre for Russian-speaking Jews is currently being constructed. It is estimated that it will cost about 12 million dollars. Chisinau remains my favourite city. The synagogue of Rabbi Tsirelson is expected to be the biggest.

Have you invited Rabbis to Chisinau in addition to Jurmala?

Эммануил Гриншпун Yes. Yes. Because of the interplay of interests, he must be a very calm and peaceful person able to organically enter the life of the community. I'm pleased to say that both in Chisinau, and in Jurmala the rabbis were able so seamlessly to integrate into the community.

In the year 2019, you were appointed vice-president at the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What is this title imply to you and how does international Jewish organizations affect the global landscape?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress has been a prominent political organization in post-Soviet Europe, however it's not the sole one. It has offices across Eastern Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. In 2010 I was Vice-President of Congress. However, the year prior to that, I was promoted to First Vice President. As of now, I'm the First Vice President for the region with which I have strong political and business relations. These include Uzbekistan (Tajikistan), Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstan). The current trend across the globe is that attitudes towards Jews are either on the same level, or have swung downwards, which is sad. Additionally, "down" - this refers to countries that are developed such as Belgium, Germany, France and even the United States. They are no longer secure for Jews. They are serious and worrying procedures for us all.

By the way, has the pandemic somehow affected these processes?

This isn't my opinion. To be more precise, I would rather highlight the potential of a society or nation in the event that they are ready to take on any challenge and are able to be effective and united when confronted with the pandemic.

Are you talking about the vaccination campaign that is taking place in Israel?

Exactly. Israel is the only country that offers 100% vaccination of its population of adults. This is an excellent model to emulate and one that all countries should be aware of.
