Minecraft has definitely gotten popular in the last decade or since it was released in 2009/2010 - it's now one of the most popular games of all time in terms of sales, and arguably in terms of its influence.

Despite this, I feel that the newer versions don't have the same vibe like the older versions (Beta 1.7.3 or older). While I'm not saying they're not bad, they're both great, but in my mind both (before and after The Adventure Update) are distinct beasts that can't really be comparably.
Modern Minecraft versions feel more RPG-like to me, which eliminates some of the loneliness that the Alpha and Beta versions left you feeling. The older versions don't have the same amount of tasks, so you need to be creative to have fun. In the newer versions though, there seems (could be wrong though) to be a few set tasks that you have to do (like collect food for the constantly-decreasing hunger bar), so you'd usually always have something to do because the game's told you that you have to do it (if that makes any sense)!
My Experience
Today, I typically play on ClassiCube, NSSS or on AlphaPlace.
ClassiCube
ClassiCube is an open-source recreation of Minecraft Classic 0.30 developed to be more modern in its use written in C and available on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, browser and even Android (although it's still in alpha). It's possible to launch the game in Singleplayer mode. you'll be able to experience a 0.30-style map with 0.30 style menus and 0.30 style blocks (same textures, block behaviours). This version 0.30 is updated for the latest operating systems (and without the need to use old versions of Java), and features an entirely new level format, vastly improved performance, and an entirely new block style.
But the fun starts when you go into the SMP (multiplayer) mode. While some servers are still only 0.30 nostalga servers, many utilize the latest Classic+Hax and Enhanced game modes, in which a lot of small and large quality-of-life enhancements have been bestowed unto us, like flight, noclip, custom blocks and more.
