What is the story behind how Roundup Ready or Roundup get their names?
What exactly is Roundup Ready? Roundup Ready is a trademark that refers to a line of genetically engineered crops that are resistant to Roundup. These are the crops that are known as Roundup Ready.

Who invented Roundup?
Glyphosate, the active agent in Roundup was first identified to be an herbicide in the year 1970 by Monsanto chemist, John Franz. Pre-emergent herbicides were widely used in the ag sector at the time. This was a Roundup resistant tomato crop derived from genetically modified tomato plants. They were also tolerant to Roundup. In the following years the Roundup Ready gene was discovered and isolated.

Let's take soybeans as an illustration. First, we need to answer two questions. What is Roundup Ready soybeans? And how do they get made? Roundup Ready Soybeans can be described as soybeans that have been genetically engineered with DNA modifications so that they can resist the active ingredient in Roundup which is the chemical glyphosate. Since each soybean seed was injected with the Roundup Ready gene before planting the seeds, they are insensitive to glyphosate. Farmers can utilize the Roundup Ready gene to spray their fields and not harm their crops.

Roundup Ready crops changed agriculture and the field of agricultural science in 1996. Farmers quickly recognized the benefits of Roundup resistance, and the adoption rate was quick (today over 90% of the U.S. soybean cotton, corn, and canola fields use biotech-based traits that allow herbicide resistance).
