Valheim was released on Steam just five weeks ago and has been a massive success ever since. Iron Gate's Viking survival game rocketed to the top of the charts and sold 5 million copies within a month of Early Access. It also surpassed Dota 2 in terms concurrent active players.
Valheim Steam reviews exude excitement, awe and relief. Players regularly compare the feeling to the first time they played Minecraft, marveling at the game's scope and depth, and questioning how a small team of five developers managed to pack this immersive experience into a single GB download. Valheim lets players play in an original world of Viking purgatory, a vast, procedurally generated, world filled with mythical Norse beasts as well as high seas, hunting and crafting. It's dense and forgiving, action-packed but peaceful.
To the present, Iron Gate has sold more than 5.7 million copies of Valheim. There are just five members of the development team. Henrik Tornqvist, Iron Gate cofounder, said to Engadget that "we're doing our best." "It has been quite hectic around here since launch."
Minecraft servers
Tornqvist and Richard Svensson, the studio founder, are planning to hire a few more people to help with the flood of bug reports that are coming in from thousands of beta testers. Otherwise, it's getting support from Coffee Stain Publishing - the people behind Goat Simulator, a veritable granddaddy of viral video games.
Svensson began working on Valheim in the year 2017 as an additional source of income. At the time Svensson and Tornqvist were colleagues at Swedish studio Pieces Interactive, but by early 2018, Svensson was able to concentrate completely on Valheim.
