Ferarro's Curious Case

We, along with many of you, have been monitoring the intriguing case of one of the most well-known Paladin bloggers, Ferarro. On May 26 we conducted an 15 Minutes of Fame interview with Ferarro. The article focused on her life as both a blogger and paladin. It also covered her experiences as game tester at Blizzard.

After the article was completed, a few things happened.

Jagoex first published a story on Ferarro's use of photos from TechDarling. Ferarro claimed she was the person in the photo, however she wasn't. Sarah Townsend, the author of TechDarling, has stated she doesn't know who Ferarro is.

Second, Ferraro's blog Paladin Schmaladin changed abruptly to privacy mode, which prevented anyone from reading it unless there was an invitation from Ferraro. Her Twitter account was subsequently locked with the message "Stalkers Are Cool" and it was removed completely the next day. Her WoW account was deleted after a server transfer and her contributions to RetPaladin.com were also deleted completely. Update: Ferarro has made her blog and statement public following the time the article was published. You can still browse the Google cache.

This raised many eyebrows and sparked a lot speculation. The whole thing came to an end today when she claimed she was multiple people. The matter is currently being investigated.

Initially Ferarro announced she was being stalked and something became so serious that it was enough to warrant her removal from the internet. It would be understandable, since someone's safety and life are more important than a World of Warcraft Blog.

Other members of different forums believed that she felt the weight of Blizzard coming down on her for possibly lying about her involvement with this company.

Others believed that it was a method to clamp down and remove herself from embarrassing incidents that had tarnished her reputation.

The entire speculation was discussed on the WoW forums (most threads are now deleted) and in the comments section of Jagoex's site. The speculation continued until Ferarro responded to the question.

She basically states that the person we've come to be able to recognize as Ferarro has been employed by seven different people. Only one of these people can write as Ferarro at a time, and only one can use Twitter. Every time a new player assumes the role of Ferarro everything is handed over. One exception: The Ferarro WoW account was transferred around "early" however it's currently being used by Ferarro #3. This is a direct violation of the Terms of Service. You'll be punished severely, including an immediate ban.

TechDarling photos of Ferarro are not the real Ferarro. They were taken without TechDarling's permission.

What's real and what's not?

We've looked into the matter, and have determined based on IP address records of comments left by Ferarro on WoW.com between July of 2008 and May 2009 that the comments all originated from the same subnet of IPs and are all geographically very local to one another. This means that "Ferarro #1" through Ferarro #7 don't live within a few blocks of each other.

An IP address is a unique address that your internet service provider assigns to you whenever you connect to the internet. It used to change a lot in the past but now, if have a cable modem , it'll only change once in a while. All internet service providers have an IP group they use to give out to their customers.

Ferraro claims that the same small ISP gave Ferraro the same IP numbers throughout the time she claimed to be with different people. Ferarro claims that her current self-proclaimed owner took over the blog in January 2009. Our IP records contradict this assertion. They clearly prove that it is the Ferarro who made the comment. Ferarro who had previously commented on this blog and later after this period.

It's possible that "Ferarro #7" has been the sole one to have commented on this blog in the last couple of years, but that's not likely considering her comments on the post made via her blog today. According to the blog post, the email address associated with Ferarro is handed over completely to the new Ferarro owner each time and the new Ferarro even goes to extreme lengths to forward emails to previous Ferarros when it's appropriate.

We have clear continuity of IP addresses and email addresses that refute her story, as all comments are linked to this email address.

What do you think of the 15-minutes-of-Fame article we published?

It's unfortunate that this has happened. Ferarro was denied numerous opportunities by Lisa Poisso to clarify, refute, and expand on the report. Ferarro was unable to answer questions about the photos, especially when they were directly questioned.

We've since taken down the TechDarling photos and added a disclaimer at the beginning of the article.

What is the status of Paladin Schmaladin?

We'll have to wait and watch.

It's unfortunate that things have gone this way. Paladin Schmaladin is a fantastic resource for Paladins and WoW players, and it's a shame to witness the authors' actions destroy this otherwise reliable source of information.
