How did Roundup Ready & Roundup come to be?
What is Roundup Ready and what are the Roundup-ready crops? Roundup Ready is a trademark name for a patented line of genetically modified crop seeds that are resistant to the glyphosate-based herbicide, Roundup. These plants are known as Roundup Ready crops.

Who invented Roundup?
John Franz, Monsanto chemical scientist, and the first person to find the active ingredient in Roundup was glyphosate in 1970, was the first person to define it as a herbicide. The majority of herbicides used in the agricultural industry were pre-emergent. That means they were applied prior to the crops and grass weeds arose. Glyphosate's amazing post-emergent capabilities in preventing the spread of large amounts of grass and broadleaf herbicides was unique. This was combined with its exceptional environmental (soil destruction, rapid degradation and no carry-over) and toxicological (extremely minimal toxicity to beneficial organisms, mammals as well as beneficial organisms.) which created a product that was revolutionary.

What year was Roundup first created?
Roundup(r) was introduced into the market in 1974, as a broad-spectrum herbicide. It quickly became one of the world's leading agricultural chemicals. It was initially employed on railroads, in ditches and on the fields during the growth seasons. This allowed farmers to control grass and broadleaf weeds that came up out of the soil cutting down on the need to tillage, preserving soil structure and reducing erosion.

Monsanto scientists saw the potential benefits that Roundup(r) Recombinant DNA product might be for farmers following the breakthroughs made in the 1970s. In the following decades the Roundup Ready gene which would be the main trait of the Roundup Ready crop was discovered. The gene was isolated and introduced into the crop.

Roundup Ready Soybeans are genetically engineered soybeans with their DNA altered to allow them to withstand the herbicide glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup. Along with reducing tillage and equipment costs, Roundup Ready crops also facilitate harvests as there are less herbicides. One of the major environmental benefits has been the growing acceptance of conservation tillage: by cutting down on plowing, farmers cut down their energy use and emissions of GHG while maintaining soil structure and reducing erosion.
