Craftbukkit is an external third-party Minecraft mod which allows you to utilize Minecraft plugins. The mod is available at Bukkit.org and works as a JAR file that runs the Minecraft server JAR.
After downloading the latest version of Craftbukkit rename the downloaded file to craftbukkit.jar. You can download the development build or the recommended build. Although recommended builds are more stable, they usually utilize older versions of Minecraft that users aren't able to connect to with their current clients. It is not recommended to use the development build unless it has been updated for the most current Minecraft version.
Copy the craftbukkit.jar file to the same directory that contains your minecraft_server.jar. This article assumes that you already have a running Minecraft server, but if you don't, check out my article on creating your own Minecraft server.
Start your Minecraft server the way you normally would, but replace minecraft_server.jar with craftbukkit.jar. You might want to increase the amount of RAM that is allocated to your server since Craftbukkit will require more memory, specifically when using plugins. Craftbukkit will initialize itself and create a configuration file called bukkit.yml. This file does not need to be altered and is a basic.
What's next for Bukkit is choosing and installing plugins. Plugins are available on Bukkit.org website under plugins.bukkit.org. https://harrashs.com/ Here you can list plugins in categories and even search for plugins using keywords. Plugins which haven't been updated recently likely won't work with the latest version of Craftbukkit/Minecraft. On a plugin page you can download the plugin, access the documentation and information, and interact with other users.
It is easy to download and install the plugin. If you download the JAR file, you can simply put it in the "plugins" folder automatically created by Craftbukkit. You'll need to restart your server for this change to take effect. The plugin also creates an additional folder with the same name as the JAR file, which contains configuration files as well as other assets required to use the plugin.
If your download is a rar or zip file you must unzip/unrar this file with a program that can handle these extensions. Move these files to your plugin folder and ensure that the JAR file is located in the root of the plugins folder. Restart your server and the new plugin will be activated.
