The motel, also known as Motor Lodge, Motor Court or Tourist Court, originally just an ordinary hotel designed for persons traveling by car, with limited parking space available. Today, motels serve travelers for leisure and business, tourists, as well as occasional vacationers and holidaymakers. Motels also offer accommodation to those who are shifting to new cities or towns. They also provide temporary shelter from the elements.
The impact of the motel business is long-established. It is, however, more focused on clients and how they affect the motel's business directly than the indirect impacts, Motels can bring more revenue to communities through taxes and other charges. Even though a motel may not be within the heart of a city, it may nevertheless have an influence on the local economy.


The motel is now a symbol of Americana. In my many trips back and forth to my house in California, I see photos from the time when the motel was first open. It was located on Main Street in Dallas. It was the very first motel to be found in Texas.

There have been a variety of debates about the effect of the motel industry on Texas highways because it has grown. Many claim that motels on freeways increase the risk of auto accidents. The statistics on motel-related incidents within freeways supports this theory. It appears to be a valid argument, at least in the beginning.

I believe, however, that the issue isn't so much the severity or number of the accidents, but the frequency and severity of the accidents that happen as people travel from one motel on the highways to another. In other words, it appears to me that the argument regarding the Commerce Clause is not really important in the first instance. Because some people believe it makes it okay to discriminate against certain categories of people and to discriminate against other groups of people.

This isn't the problem. The problem is that the United States government tried to make use of the commerce clause to protect some people and favor other people. The 1964 Civil Rights Act was an example of how the United States government tried to use the commerce clause to stop private businesses discriminating in hiring. The government basically said that you have to ensure that you don't discriminate when you lease your motel rooms for African-Americans. It also said that should you decide to employ somebody who is a member of the mafia or the gook, then you have ensure that he doesn't have any mafia ties or gook ties. This is not a bad thing necessarily however, the United States government, which was trying to protect its industry from protectionist tendencies, stepped into this dangerous slope.

The outcome was that the Supreme Court ruled in the Loving decision that the Commerce Clause didn't give the federal government the power to stop private citizens from discrimination in the hiring process. The court held that the Loving precedent which states that race, color, and gender shouldn't be used as grounds for discrimination was irrelevant. This opened the door for private companies to choose who they'd choose to hire based on whatever they felt they liked. It's also not true that Civil Rights Act's drafters were planning for the state action as an element of the Civil Rights Laws.

The history of the Civil Rights cases reveal an America where people could not be judgemental and were not able to be discriminated against based on their gender or race. This was the America which the United States Congress adopted in the 1960's. It's the America we would like to return to. We should hopefully be able to learn from the past and move quickly past this horrible incident in our nation's history.
