Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received some feedback from the community seeking clarification and clarity regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

While we are currently working on updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to provide more precise guidance on new technologies, we want to take the chance to let you know that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we allow or even support. Let's take a closer look!

What is an NFT?

An NFT is an unique, non-editable digital token that is part of a blockchain , and is often purchased with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated to any digital asset, such as an MPEG or GIF. However digital art like JPEGs is the most popular use case for this token. The purchase of an NFT provides the token that proves ownership of the original digital file. But, as with any digital file, that file can be moved, copied, or even deleted. Blockchain and NFTs are also linked to speculation, in which prices are driven up rapidly and as we have recently seen, may fall rapidly.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME

We strongly suggest that you read the following information if you are a participant or creator involved in trading buying or selling of NFTs that utilize Minecraft (like worlds and skins). If you don't, these changes will not affect you.

OUR POLICY ON NFTs and MINECRAFT

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how the owner of a server can charge for access and that all players should have the same capabilities. minecraft servers These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone has access to the same content. NFTs are able to create exclusion and scarcity models which are not in line with our Guidelines and the spirit and purpose of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into our server and client applications, nor can Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, personal items, or any other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset. These are our reasons.

Certain companies have recently launched NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world files and skin packs. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchains could be utilized in conjunction with Minecraft include the creation of Minecraft collectible NFTs that allow players to earn NFTs through activities performed on a server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for activities outside of the game.

Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together. NFTs are not inclusive of all members of our community and create a semblance of the haves and the have-nots. The speculative pricing and investment mentality associated with NFTs diverts attention from the game itself and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term joy and success of our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being reliable and could end up costing those who purchase them. Certain third-party NFT implementations are dependent on blockchain technology, and may require an asset manager, who may disappear without notice. There have also been instances when NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently price increases. We understand that the process of creating our game is of great value and we aim to provide a marketplace where those values are acknowledged.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a secure, inclusive experience Blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. They also cannot be used to create NFTs using any in-game content including skins and worlds, personal items, or other mods. We will also be watching closely how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure that these principles are not violated and determine whether it will enable more secure experiences or other inclusive and practical games. We do not have any plans to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft as of now.

We hope to share more with you shortly. In the meantime If you're interested in reading more on our guidelines you can find them here. Keep watching!
