Minecraft YouTube Videos have been Watched 47bn Times

Adults and kids alike aren't just playing Minecraft in their millions: they're watching YouTube videos made using Minecraft - and those videos are racking up billions of views.



Octoly, an online video platform has released a report that aims to quantify this. It claims that Minecraft videos were viewed 30.8 billion times as of June 2014. Only 183 million of those views came from Mojang, Mojang's publisher.



This is almost three times the amount of views for Grand Theft Auto videos. Octoly estimates that Grand Theft Auto was the second most-watched gaming brand on YouTube, with nearly 12 billion views. It was ahead of Call of Duty (10.2 Billion), Angry Birds (6 Billion) and Halo (4.8 Billion).



According to the company, Minecraft videos have been viewed an additional 16 billion times since June, bringing the total to 47.4 billion views. Octoly explained that Octoly360 discovered 81,000 YouTube creators talking about Minecraft in June. "Today there are twice as many creator channels that feature Minecraft videos than they did in June," Octoly explained.



Minecraft being so far ahead of rival brands will not be a shock to anyone who has been following the game or the development of YouTube in the past few years.



Tubefilter published a chart listing the top 100 YouTube channels in September 2014. all kinds of games It utilized data from analytics firm OpenSlate to show that Stampy was a child-friendly Minecraft channel was the third-largest with 189.6 millions views.

Mojang has supported its YouTube community since the early days of Minecraft by avoiding copyright disputes with video creators and avoiding any interference to the content of their videos.



"We have many people who earn their living by making videos about Minecraft. Vu Bui, Mojang's chief operating executive has told the Guardian that the economics of Minecraft are incredible.



"That doesn't take any of our advantages and I'd say it actually enhances the value of Minecraft having people who are exceptionally talented and creative in their work. We have effectively outsourced YouTube videos to millions of people. The results they generate are more creative than anything we've ever created.



YouTube is a major reason Minecraft is so popular in 2014. It's also a major factor in Microsoft's decision to buy Mojang at $2.5bn.
