September NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Boost Industry [Update]

It's a good thing for everyone! The NPD Group reports that the video game industry's performance in the physical retail sector was up by 27 percent year-over year for the month of September: $1.07 billion this year against $848 million in the previous year.

Predictably, the major portion of the increase in income was derived from the software segment, which is also known as "where all the Grand Theft Auto 5 money is stored." September saw a 52 percent jump in physical sales for portable and console games that was an increase of $497.5 million over the same period last fiscal year. GTA 5 is clearly the most popular September game, followed by Madden NFL 25 (NBA 2k14), and Madden NFL 25 (NBA 3k14).

The period's hardware sales generated $183.2million thirteen percent less than the September 2012 figures. The Nintendo 3DS was the most popular product in the category for five months. Wii U sales increased more than 200 percent over August. However, Nintendo did not provide any figures on how many Wii U boxes this translates to.

According to Liam Callahan, NPD Group analyst, the PlayStation 3 broke the Xbox 360's long-running streak of success and was the best-selling console of the time. This was largely due to the PlayStation 3's Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle.

The Accessories segment, which includes gift cards and digital currency vouchers, Skylanders/Disney Infinity figures, as well as other items, was mostly flat year-over-year, experiencing just an increase of 2 percent in sales at $142.3 million.

Update: Microsoft has chimed in saying that it made 80 million sales to retailers of the Xbox 360 worldwide in September with console sales reaching $401.2 million. In a bid to claim that the Xbox 360 was the No. one selling console in the month of March, Microsoft instead says that it remains the top console in the US in 2013. Clever phrasing and team.

Nintendo 3DS Repeats at No. 1, Wii U Responds to Price Cut

With a strong performance, Nintendo enters the holiday season with a strong foothold. The Nintendo 3DS was the top-selling videogame system in America for the fifth straight month. The Wii U gained momentum after an increase in price.

On Oct. 15, Nintendo announced that Pokemon X (and Pokemon Y) was released worldwide on Oct. 12. The game sold more than 4 million units in their first two days. The next NPD Report will feature an exhaustive analysis of U.S. sales as well as a comprehensive review of the new Nintendo 2DS handheld. In addition to the newest Pokemon adventure, Nintendo 3DS fans have two exciting games in the pipeline, both launching on Nov. 22: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Mario Party: Island Tour.

On September. 20, Nintendo reduced the price of the Wii U Deluxe Set by $50 to an estimated retail price of $299.99 and released a limited-edition set that comes with a download code for a digital copy of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. Sales of Wii U hardware in September were up by more than 200 percent over sales in August and that's with just 15 days of data reported at the new price. Wii U gamers can look for Wii Party U (Oct. 25, Wii Fit U, Nintendo eShop November. 1) Mario & Sonic in Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, (Nov. 15), and Super Mario 3D World, (Nov. 22).

*Data on physical sales of games in September are from the NPD Group. Data about digital downloads of games, the combined digital and physical lives-to-date figures, and data regarding digital games come from Nintendo's internal sales figures. Except for the exceptions, all numbers are specific to the United States.
