The fall of last year was a turbulent time for Mirai. It was the first to hijack several IoT devices to launch an enormous Distributed Denial-Of-Service attack (DDoS), on the KrebsOnSecurity website in September. Then, it brought down a large chunk of the internet just a few months later. Who is responsible for the attack? After his site went dark, security researcher Brian Krebs went on a mission to identify its creator, and he thinks he has the answer: Multiple sources and corroborating evidence point to Paras Jha, a Rutgers University student and owner of DDoS protection company Protraf Solutions.
The source code of the Mirai botnet was released by the attacker, who went under the name Anna Senpai, about a week later. This led to the emergence of other copycat attacks. However, it also provided Krebs the first clue in their long-running search to discover Anna Senpai's real-life identity -an investigation that was so thorough that Krebs created a glossary of cross-referenced terms and terms along with an incomplete map of relationships.
The full report is admittedly long with over 8000 words, but it's worth the time to understand how botnet wranglers earn a living by deploying zombie devices on innocent targets. The sources that led Krebs to Anna Senpai's identity were involved in the use of botnets on behalf of clients in shadows, and unleashing them on security firms that protect lucrative Minecraft servers that host thousands of gamers. Players will leave if their online gaming is affected, for example, by annoying DDoS attacks or repeated DDoS attacks. Minecraftserverlist Servers are enticed to switch to security services that can provide protection and, in this case, the same providers that orchestrated the botnet attack.
Krebs sources claim that Krebs the security website was hacked into the botnet war by it publishing information in September and resulting in the arrests of the two hackers behind the Israeli "vDos" attack service. Anna Senpai was allegedly bribed to unleash Mirai on the KrebsOnSecurity site by vengeful clients who'd used the vDos service that's now gone and thereby bolstering the security company's interest in.
