'Minecraft' Tops 100 million Sales

The Minecraft juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down. The game's developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms, including PCs, Macs consoles, mobile, and PCs. The game has sold 53,000 copies. game have been sold every day since its inception. The game keeps people hooked too -- more than 40 million people start the Minecraft world every month to play with blocks, shovel, axe and sword. There aren't many games that have been close to hitting 100 million players with Tetris being the only exception.



Much of that success is due to the game's open design and endless potential. As as the outward-facing geometry of the game is comprised of simple, colorful blocks, players are able to create whatever they want. Many players have continued to play for years even though they're old. Mojang has offered constant updates to the game, introducing new mechanics, creatures, and materials. Its flexibility has made it a hit in the classroom, where it can be used to teach geology, art, and even coding.



Many wondered what Microsoft had in mind for Mojang when it acquired the company nearly two years back. A sequel? A kind of exclusiveness to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? It's not been realized. well Minecraft is now available on more platforms than ever before, and there's been no mention of the possibility of a Minecraft 2. Instead, we've seen a HoloLens version of the game, a spin-off adventure series by Telltale Games and an acquisition of MinecraftEdu which will bring about a new, education-focused version of Minecraft. Soon there will be a version just for China as well.



Minecraft's popularity isn't showing any signs of waning. Its appeal isn't a finite story or tremendous graphics. Because of this it has a timeless appeal that attracts youngsters as they become old enough to play it. As long as this continues, Minecraft will continue to sell at a phenomenal rate.
