Storm in a #TrumpCup Hillary Clinton's makeup and #MarcosIsNotAHero By Tse Yin Lee BBC News
18 November 2016
Today's social trends include Trump supporters wanting his name on their coffee cups, rage as former Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos is buried in the Heroes Cemetery, and Hillary Clinton's first appearance in public since losing the White House sparks a debate about makeup.
Storm in a #TrumpCup
Twitter supporters of President-elect Donald Trump encourage each other to ask for Trump's name on their coffees at Starbucks. The campaign is currently trending in the US using the hashtag #TrumpCup. But is it all a big fuss over nothing?
Wow Private Server Club
The campaign was reportedly started after the viral sharing of a video from @lollicakesFL on November 8 the video purportedly shows a server from the coffee chain refusing to place Trump's name on a cup for customers. Another employee reported the incident to the police.
The video was shared more widely this week after it was covered by Infowars.com. The website has a history of publishing anti-Trump and conspiracy stories. It was also made public by a number of Trump-supporting Twitter accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers.
"Every time you visit @Starbucks, ask them to write TRUMP on the cup." !!!" @RamboBiggs tweeted.
"Operation Trump Cup" 1) Go to Starbucks and tell them your name is Trump 2) Share the video with friends If they do not want to share, tweet @BakedAlaska
This is despite @lollicakesFL going back to Starbucks on 9/11 and having no trouble getting her #TrumpCup.
She posted a photo of the photo, captioned: "And I'm TRUMP today !!!! Amazing, the cops were not called and no one got offended."
Another prominent pro-Trump account posted what appears to have been an effective and trouble-free attempt to win a #TrumpCup.
However, not everyone agrees with the idea. I'm not going to a Starbucks. I'd rather patronize my local mom and pop shop here, and give them my money," said one account.
#MarcosIsNotAHero
Many Filipinos are furious over the burial of Ferdinand Marcos, former President at the Heroes Cemetery.
The hashtag #MarcosIsNotAHero has been trending in the Philippines with over 67,000 tweets and 85,000 users discussing it on Facebook.
"Let THIS go down in the books of history. It had to be secret. One popular tweet stated that it was not widely celebrated in the country.
"I am curious if his epitaph reads: Here: Lies. #MarcosBurial #MarcosNOTaHero #NeverForget" said another.
The Marcos family has its supporters. The videos of the ceremony, uploaded by Imee, the eldest daughter of the former president have been watched hundreds and thousands of times on Facebook.
"This is very touching. He is a brilliant leader and now he will be buried... Rest in peace, Mr. Marcos. We can rest here too... One person who commented on the video said, "Thank you for being the most powerful leader in our nation."
What is the reason for this question about makeup or not?
Hillary Clinton's first appearance in public this week since she lost the race for the White House has sparked a small but heated debate on social media, all about her makeup. Or, more specifically the absence of it, in comparison to when she was campaigning.
"Hillary Clinton looks awful. I'm talking about horrible! It appears that she didn't bother to do her hair or makeup. Her entire world was devastated by this loss. One tweet read, "Wow!"
"Hillary Clinton appears to be looking like her entire glamorous entourage has left her. The feathers in her hair are gone and so is her makeup. She just woke from a nightmare. Truly," said another.
Ohers had a different opinion about her plainer appearance.
One commenter said, "Inspired" by this video of Clinton virtually no makeup. It is a lesson in the virtues of putting yourself back together.
The issue is worthy of any comments, and this was the most pronounced feeling.
"Shaming Hillary Clinton for not wearing makeup? Really?! Women are more than just makeup. One user said, "It's 2016, for heaven's sake!"
"May it be known that when an autocrat came to power in the US, @usweekly discussed the amount of makeup Secretary Clinton used to wear," agreed another.
