FCC Commissioner Writes to Apple and Google about the Removal of TikTok

An FCC Commissioner, Brendan Carr, wrote to Apple and Google on Tuesday, requesting the companies remove TikTok from their app stores for "its pattern of surreptitious data practices." This comes after BuzzFeed News reported last week that TikTok's workers in China had access to U.S.-based users' data until January.

"As you know TikTok is an app that is available to millions of Americans through your app stores, and it collects huge amounts of sensitive data about U.S. users. TikTok is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance which is an organization that is tied to the Communist Party of China and is required by Chinese law to conform to the China's demands for surveillance," Carr said in a letter addressed to Sundar Pichai and Tim Cook.

"It is clear that TikTok poses a serious security risk to the nation due to its massive data harvesting being combined with Beijing's allegedly unchecked access access to this sensitive data."

TikTok is more than a video app. This is the sheep's clothing.

It collects sensitive data, which according to reports, is being accessed in Beijing.

BuzzFeed News published the report. TikTok quickly defended itself and announced that all U.S. users' data will be moved to Oracle servers in the United States. It also stated that the company still uses its U.S.- and Singapore-based backup servers. It stated that it is planning to "delete U.S. users private information from our data centers and then pivot to Oracle cloud servers in the U.S."

"We're also making improvements to our operations to support this work which includes the new department that we just established, along with U.S. leadership, to manage U.S. user information for TikTok," said the company.

The TikTok's practices for user data have come under suspicion many times. In 2020, India banned TikTok over national security concerns, and both the former President Donald Trump and the current president Joe Biden have raised questions about the app's relations with China and how it affects U.S. users' data. Trump suggested an end to TikTok or the possibility of selling its U.S. users' personal data.
