Dundee Pupils Redesign City Waterfront Using Minecraft

Dundee pupils redesign city waterfront with Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school students have put forward their designs for the future of the city's waterfront, using the game Minecraft.

Primary pupils have spent several months playing the popular video game to develop plans for the area, which is undergoing an PS1bn-related revitalization.

Dundee City Council and University of Dundee led the project.

The appearance of the plans was considered and so was the need to support tourism education and job creation.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp which involves primary 6 and seven pupils from across the city students from nine secondary schools have taken place in similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

Students were working in groups using Playstation and XBox consoles. They connected to whiteboards in classrooms , and made use of them to imagine and create their own visions of the city's waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson, Dundee University's school for education, said that the game was a "huge phenomenon" that was a great way to engage children.

He added: "We need to understand the digital environments that children use and how they can to influence their learning.

"If we want to involve children in topics like environmental design and design, then games and applications like this are a great tool.

"The children we have worked with over the last few months have been incredibly enthusiastic and they have produced some really great work. Some of it may prove a challenge for the city planners, but this is the beauty of Minecraft it can create anything."

Mr. Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from all over the world to participate in a Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles to discuss ways in which Minecraft can be best employed in both informal and formal learning.
