Fortnite may be the most popular game, but that doesn’t mean it’s harming other gaming phenomenons. Microsoft's Helen Chiang told Business Insider in an interview that Minecraft now has 112 million active players every month, a surge of 20 million over figures from October 2018. This includes players on all platforms and includes those who play as part of an Xbox Game Pass, but this is still a significant feat for a game that's been around in some form for a good decade.
Chiang said it partly due to the imaginative game’s evergreen status -- people "keep coming back" to it. You may fire up Fortnite or any other game that are in the spotlight, but there's a real chance that you'll want to build tunnels and homes in Minecraft after that.
Other factors are likely to be important also. On top of its sheer accessibility across platforms, Minecraft's unwieldy graphics and simple mechanics allow you to play on modestly-equipped devices regardless of whether it's a budget PC or a smartphone. You can still enjoy a great experience with the smallest investment in hardware.
Microsoft's task is to keep the game relevant. The augmented reality aspect of Minecraft Earth helps, as do other methods to enhance the look. It's unclear if that's enough, though. Minecraft Roblox recently reached 100 million monthly users, and Fortnite may be on the verge of that (it reported 78.3million users in August 2018). It might not take much for other games to capture the cultural zeitgeist.
