iLands is a free game for iPhone and iPad that is available for iOS 4.3 or later. However, iLands Premium is available as an in-app purchase for (US $3.99.) My city If you're not wanting to pay $6.99 for Minecraft - Pocket Edition, then this is your game. You start with a fresh block world to build upon and personalize however you like.
The graphics are decent in comparison to Minecraft the Pocket Edition, but they could be much better. The D-pad on the left side of the screen allows for strafingand moving forward and backwards. Moving around with the D-pad can be frustrating at times. The sensitivity takes a little getting used at first but it's manageable for the most part. The control on your right side is only for jumping up and works well. The experience of navigating the terrain was a bit slow, especially when you had to hop over obstacles. Sometime the touch targets wouldn't respond until I touched several times. It would take more than two taps to break dirt, grass, or blocks using the X button. While I was creating and exploring my Solo world, the game crashed often.
You're given an assortment of building materials that include grass, sand, bricks, and sand. The steel skeleton cubes are exclusive to iLands since I've not seen anything like them in Minecraft - Pocket Edition. The steel skeleton blocks are fantastic because you can construct a solid structure and still have a view and daylight unlike building with solid blocks. I enjoyed building with cobblestone to build houses and roads. The materials with locks can be unlocked by purchasing the full version. For this review , I tried the free version.
If you're looking for a survival mode that is similar to Minecraft - Pocket Edition, you will not find it in the free version of iLands. I'm not sure if something similar to survival is available in the full paid version. I tend to play in creative mode all the time in Minecraft - Pocket Edition anyway, so I was not averse to that in iLands.
Overall, iLands is worth the free download if you love building with blocks in a virtual world like I do. I'd like to know what the paid version will allow you to do, aside from unlocking building materials. I was awed by building structures and anything else my mind was able to imagine.
