Breck Bednar's Mom Appeals to Gamers to "play Virtual and Live Real'

Breck Bednar's mom enjoins gamers to "play virtual, live life"

12 January 2015

The mother of the Surrey boy who was killed by an online gamer claims that the story of her son will help other players to be safer online.

Breck Bednar was killed by Lewis Daynes after the 19-year-old lured him to his home in Grays in Essex.

Lorin LaFave stated: "I would like to see Breck's story prove that there is really evil out there. Not everyone.

"But it only takes one person to cause such damage."

Lewis Daynes pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life prison

Lorin from Caterham claims that Breck and his friends would regularly have evenings of playing war games on a server set up by Daynes.

"When I would pass by his room or enter his bedroom, I could feel the excitement. I also understood why they were socializing in this way."

She started to get worried about the possibility that Daynes was exerting a greater influence over her son and that his personality was beginning to change.

"Breck was telling my that Daynes did not believe he should have the computer on his desk. Daynes did not think the need to perform chores. Daynes did not believe that he should be required to participate in family activities.

Lorin took her son's laptop away and reported her concerns the police.

'Manipulative behaviour'

"I told them about Daynes's manipulative behaviour and the fact that I thought he was grooming Breck and the other boys. I explained, "I know there's a issue because he's changing Breck's behavior and beliefs."

She didn't even know that Breck, an older teenager who was a senior, had given Breck an iPhone to stay in contact.

She claims that he would inform Breck about lucrative opportunities in business, promising in one email that they would work together and make millions of pounds.

Lorin believes the boys were impressed with the fake online persona Daynes created for him.

"For some reason Breck wanted to believe in it. He wanted to be involved with someone who seemed to have such influence, such amounts of money and such knowledge. He was a mentor, I believe. They were looking up to him."

Daynes informed Breck that they had to meet face to face to discuss business. Mccainsource.com Daynes booked a taxi to take Breck to his residence. It was there that Breck was killed.

To encourage responsible use of technology To promote responsible use of technology, the Bednar family founded The Breck Bednar Memorial Foundation.

Their slogan is "Play Virtual Live Real."

"The internet is an excellent tool but play virtually with those friends, live real. Only make time to meet people that you have met in person. Breck did not live a real life. His reality was death due to the fact that Breck believed in a devilish person's falsehoods."

She knows that this is a message young people should hear - Breck had taken an online safety course a month prior to his murder, but she wants to ensure they don't ignore it.

"If Breck was here, he would say, "Guys, I didn't believe that either however, there are some dangerous people out there." He lost his life.

"Imagine the message coming from Breck"

She wants young people to imagine the safety message comes from Breck himself.

"What did he say to himself when the police slapped him on the back by Daynes? Did he think'Wow, mum was right?' Did you think, "Wow, mum was right!" What went through his head? Because at that point , it was too late."

Ms. LaFave would like the government to invest more money in this area so that every parent can be assured that an investigation will be conducted when they voice concerns online.

Daynes was scheduled to stand trial on murder charges, however, he pleaded guilty at the last moment. He'll serve a minimum of 25 years.

The manner in which Surrey and Essex Police handled the case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

They will attempt to determine if the force could have done anything differently.
