No NFTs In Minecraft, Mojang Says

The update begins with a quick rundown of what NFTs are, including a note about their extreme volatility, before laying out the current policies for Minecraft servers. The main goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone can access the same content." NFTs however, are designed to "create models of exclusion and scarcity," which is clearly in opposition to this principle. Therefore, they're banned.

Mojang declared that blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our client and server applications, nor could Minecraft game-specific content such as worlds, skins and other items be used by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset.

Mojang said that the update was prompted by a number of Minecraft-related NFTs (and play-to-earn) servers. This exploits the gap in the official policy to divide the community into "the haves" and "the have-nots".

A further issue is the fact that certain NFTs "may not be trustworthy and could end up costing those who purchase them," which is a extremely polite way of putting it the unofficial Minecraft NFT game Blockverse (opens in a new tab), which disappeared with more than $1.2 million in January, is only one of the many examples of NFT-related misfeasance (opens in a new tab) and criminality (opens in a new tab) that we've seen in the past few years. Top minecraft servers This is particularly true for Minecraft because its audience tends to skew younger than many other games, which makes it likely to be more susceptible to scams.

The official Minecraft usage guidelines (opens new tab) have been updated to address the matter in more depth. However, the most important point is: "NFTs associated any in-game contents, including skins for worlds, persona objects or other mods" are strictly prohibited.

Mojang has stated that it will continue to monitor the progress of blockchain technology to determine if it will "enable safer gaming experiences or other applications that are practical and inclusive in gaming," suggesting official support could be possible in the near future. At present, however, "we have no plans to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft."
