Age of Empires meets Doom? Heck yeah!

Id Software's legendary Doom is playable in many different ways, including Minecraft crabs and even in an article we wrote. Age of Empires 2 can now be added to the list. Modders have developed an entire strategy campaign based upon Doom and features the legendary sound effects from the FPS and sprites.

'Age of Doom' has been created by modder "HellKnight61" (thanks, DSOGaming) and is a full custom campaign for Age of Empires 2 that recreates the events of the original Doom's tale - mostly in the style of Doom 3, with the escape from Hell by the demons, orchestrated by Dr. Betruger, although characters from later Doom games like Vega do appear.
The mod released version 1.0 this week and can downloaded from ModDB. Although it is missing the final episode the mod still includes four episodes and a tutorial. HellKnight61 has added many features to make it more Doom-like than Age of Empires, including the capability for the Doom marine to flick switches, use teleporters, and even sprint.
The Doom guy gets all of the classic weapons from Doom including the BFG and even Doom 3's Soul Cube. All the monsters appear with sound effects cherry-picked from across the games. It's fundamentally Doom as an isometric shooter using an Age of Empires lens. It's an impressive piece of art.
Despite both being released in the early 90s, the Doom and Age of Empires franchises continue to thrive. Age of Empires 4 is out just next month, and it might even get another beta prior to that. For Doom, last year's Doom Eternal is still having new features and there could be "more stories to tell" with the Doom Slayer.
