A new version of Minecraft designed for classroom use is now available for early access. Minecraft: Education Edition was released in January as part of Microsoft's acquisition MinecraftEdu, which is a group that has been developing the game for teachers. The upgrade is available for free this summer, before a per-student pricing model is introduced for the academic year. Microsoft has provided MinecraftEdu users a year of free access to Education Edition as a thank you. The offer will likely start when the trial is over.
Education Edition has a few advantages over the default version of Minecraft. It can accommodate up to 30 students learn together in one place. Hunter This eliminates the requirement for a private server via an online service like Minecraft Realms. Teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs) to create a more guided experience, and equip them with web-based links to allow students access additional resources. There's also a chalkboard item for providing instructions and cameras that students can use to take photographs of their work, creating an in-game portfolio as they go along.
Microsoft states that it is currently working on other features requested by the public. The new interface gives teachers an interactive map with markers for each student as well as the possibility of teleporting users (should anyone wander off or make a mistake), and a chat window to manage class-wide and private conversations. Minecraft has already proven itself to be a powerful education tool. It can teach geography, art, and even coding. There is an official version for schools.
