British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter
23 September 2014
The British Museum in London - complete with all its exhibits - will be recreated in the video game Minecraft.
The project is part of the Museum of the Future scheme, which aims to expand the institution's appeal.
Many real-life organisations have created maps in the Minecraft universe such as Ordnance Survey and the Danish government, which aims to make young people more aware of their work.
Last week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).
A spokesperson for the museum said that the project was in "an early planning phase" and that the "build" has not yet begun.
She explained that the company was looking for volunteers to assist in the "construction".
The British Museum
The first national museum of the nation founded in 1753
The UK's most visited tourist attraction
More than six million visitors visit the museum every year and contains eight million items
Its natural history collections were relocated to South Kensington in 1880s, where it would become the Natural History Museum.
Its instantly identifiable Great Court, designed by Lord Foster is the largest covered public space in Europe
One British Museum employee posted details of the project on social media site Reddit and asked for volunteers to get involved.
He received a warm response from Minecraft fans across the world.
Initial stages
Digitally creating the Great Court, facade and interior of the building is the first step in the process.
The institution hopes that this stage will be in place at the time of the public debate entitled Changing public dialogs with museums in the digital age. The event will be held on 16 Oct.

Ed Barton, who researches gaming for the analytics firm Ovum Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's shift to Minecraft will help it to be "perceived as something enjoyable" and be an effective educational tool for the younger demographic.
"It's the digital equivalent of building the British Museum in Lego," he said. It must be built brick by brick.
He also said that the company deserves praise for crowdsourcing the project "as this turns it into something that is collaborative" and can further draw in youngsters Minecraft fans.
"What is a great idea it would be to be asked to build the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.
Those interested in contributing to the British Museum's project can sign up on Reddit.
